본 논문에서는 신체 장기인 오장육부의 고유어 명칭에 대해 문헌 자료를 토대로 통시적 변화 과정을 살펴보았고, 이들의 다의화 및 관용 표현 형성 여부를 고찰하였다. 20세기 초기까지의 문헌 자료를 토대로 살펴본 결과 오장육부의 고유어 명칭은 ‘애, 부아, 허파, 콩팥, 말하, 지라, 마음, 염통, 심통, 양, 밥통, 쓸개, 오좀깨, 오줌통, 창자’ 등이 문증되었는데, 이들 중 ‘애, 마음’은 근대국어 시기를 전후해 의미 전이가 완료되었으며, ‘말하, 오좀깨’는 소멸하였다. 또한 ‘애, 부아, 허파, 마음, 염통, 쓸개, 창자’ 들은 다의화되었고 관용 표현 형성에도 참여하였으나 ‘콩팥, 말하, 지라, 양, 오좀깨, 오줌통’ 들은 관용 표현을 형성하지 않았다. 고유어 장기 명칭들이 의미 전이되었거나 다의화한 경우, 그 의미에서 공통적으로 발견되는 의미는 ‘마음’이다. 이는 오장육부가 공간적으로 신체의 내부에 위치하고 있어서 사람의 마음이나 심리를 비유하여 쓰였고 이런 쓰임이 ‘구체→추상’라는 의미의 추상화 과정을 거쳐 다의화한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 고유어 장기 명칭의 다의화에서 공통으로 발견되는 ‘마음’의 추상적 의미는 ‘사람의 성격, 행동, 감정, 심리, 생각 등을 관장하는 신체 내부의 추상적 공간’으로 정의될 수 있다.

The purpose of this article is to study how change native Korean words for the internal organs in the Korean historical materials. Also it is to study what these words made idiomatic expressions, and what is the cause and the process polysemization of these words. In the Korean historical materials, the words like ‘as(애), bua(부아), heopa(허파), Kongpat(콩팥), malha(말하), jira(지라), maeum(마음), yeomtong(염통), simtong(심통), yang(양), baptong(밥통), sseulgae(쓸개), ojomkkae(오좀깨), ojomtong(오좀통), changja(창자)’ have appeared. Among these words, ‘as(애)’ and ‘maeum(마음)’ had completely transferred of meaning in the 17 century to up. And ‘malha(말하), ojomkkae(오좀깨)’ are disappeared around the 17 century. Words like ‘as(애), bua(부아), heopa(허파), maedum(마음), yeomtong(염통), sseulgae(쓸개), is polisemized and formed own idiomatic expressions. But ‘kongpat(콩팥), malha(말하) jira(지라), yang(양), ojomkkae(오좀깨), ojomtong(오좀통)’ didn`t form own idiomatic expressions. Humans are often comparing mental and mind because the organs are placed in internal of body. Because of this, the common meaning when native Korean words for internal organs are transfer own meanings and polysemous is ‘maeum(마음)’. The uses of these polysemy passed concreteness to abstraction. Finally, the meaning of ‘maeum(마음)’ connoted in names of internal organs is the abstract space of the body that control human`s characters, actions, feelings, mental and ideas.
