본 연구에서는 어휘부의 구조를 중심으로 단어를 분석하고 형성하는 심리적 과정을 살펴보았다. 먼저 단어는 구성 요소 분석과 (형태적·의미적) 통합관계 분석의 두 과정이 단계적으로 반복 적용되면서 분석된다. 분석의 각 단계에서 단어의 구성 요소는 어휘 목록에서 이를 확인함으로써 분석된다. 통합관계는 형태 규칙과 의미 추론을 활용하여 분석될 수도 있고, 계열관계에 기반한 유추를 활용하여 분석될 수도 있다. 다음으로 단어는 형성 요소를 선택하는 과정과 형태적 통합관계를 확인하는 과정을 거쳐서 만들어진다. 이때 형태적 통합관계는 형태 규칙에 의해서도 확인될 수 있고, 계열관계에 기반한 유추를 통해서도 확인될 수 있다. 다만 이른바 ‘최초의 단어’는 통합관계를 확인하는 과정에서 통사 규칙을 원용할 수도 있고, 단어 형성 과정에서 새로운 형태 규칙(형태 결합의 새로운 질서)이 만들어질 수도 있다. 한편 형태 규칙은 형태적 통합관계에 내재한 질서를 형식화한 것이라는 점에서 본 연구의 단어 분석과 단어 형성은 규칙론의 그것과는 다르다. 그리고 유추는 통합관계를 분석하고 확인하는 과정에서 제한적으로 활용된다는 점에서 본 연구의 단어 분석과 단어 형성은 이를 폭넓게 활용하는 유추론의 그것과도 다르다.

This study aims to examine the mental process to analyse the internal structure of words and to form words. The analysis of a word is to analyse constituents of a word and to analyse the syntagmatic relation between them. A word is analysed by the repeated application of these two process. Constituents of a Word are analysed by ascertaining them in the lexicon. The syntagmatic relation between constituents is analysed by two different ways. On the one hand, it can be analysed by the formal rules(as the syntagmatic order between morphological units) and the linguistic competence to infer the meaning. On the other hand, it can be analysed by the analogy based on the paradigmatic relation. And a Word is formed by selecting lexical items from a lexicon and checking the syntagmatic relation between them.
