진학문은 러시아 단편소설, 투르게네프 산문시, 타고르 시 번역에서 선구적인 역할을 맡은 번역가다. 일본에 유학하면서 러시아 문학에 열중한 진학문은 초창기 산문시 번역을 주도했으며 타고르 소개와 번역에서 결정적인 계기를 마련했다. 또한 진학문은 후타바테이 시메이 소설의 번안을 통해 일본문학을 둘러싼 역사적 문제성을 집약적으로 보여 주었다. 식민지 시기의 번역문학은 일본어를 경유한 서양문학의 중역에 압도되었으나 일본의 근대문학은 거의 번역되지 않았으며 창작으로 위장되거나 번안으로만 존립해야 했다.
Jin Hak-mun is a translator that played a leading role in translating Russian short stories, Turgenev`s prose poems, and Tagore`s poetry. Jin Hak-mun became devoted to Russian literature while studying in Japan. He led the translation of prose poetry in the early modern Korean literature, and had an important opportunity of the introduction and translation of Tagore. Jin Hak-mun concisely showed the historical issues surrounding Japanese literature through adaptation of Hutabatei Simei`s novel. Although the translated literature during the colonial period was inundated with second-hand translations, there were hardly any translations of Japanese modern literature. Western literature was introduced to Korea via the Japanese translation, but Japanese modern literature existed only as adaptations or disguised creations.
