공공디자인, 시각매체 디자인, 지폐디자인, 은행권디자인 public design, banknote design본 연구는 사용성, 위조방지와 같은 지폐디자인의 부분적 특성이 아닌 전체 구성, 표현적 특성을 통해 세계 지폐디자인의 세대를 분류함으로써 시대적인 지폐디자인의 흐름을 파악하고, 현재 4세대의 지폐디자인을 선보이고 있는 상위 19개국의 사례분석을 통해 현대 지폐디자인의 다섯가지 표현적 특성에 기준하여 다음 한국은행권의 디자인의 개선점을 제안하고자 하였다. 우선, 화폐디자인 아카이브 사이트의 298개국의 사례를 대상으로 근대국가의 성립시점에서 현재까지 각국의 지폐디자인이 보이는 흐름의 변화를 토대로 최종적으로 4세대로 세대를 분류하였다. 1세대는 지폐디자인의 고유한 형식이 확립되었고, 2세대는 달러화의 구성적 특성이 세계화폐디자인을 주도하였으며, 3세대는 구성적 측면에서 모더니즘 양식이 반영되었고, 자국문화가 적극적으로 표현되기 시작한다. 4세대는 하나의 스타일로 통일되지 않는 포스트모던한 특성을 보인다. 다시 4세대의 표현적 특성을 색채, 구성, 선화, 도형, 문화표현의 다섯가지 축으로 정의하여 19개국의 사례를 분석한 결과를 토대로 한국은행권 디자인의 개선점을 항목별로 제안하였다. 현재의 한국은행권은 4세대의 지폐디자인이 보이는 다섯 가지 특성을 모두 포함하고 있으나, 70년대 이후로 구성에 큰 변화가 없고 개별 요소들이 타 국가의 지폐에 비하여 인지되기 어렵다. 따라서 문화콘텐츠로써 한국은행권이 사용되기 위해서는 자유로운 구성과 함께 뚜렷하게 인지될 수 있는 표현적 시도가 필요하다.

I`ve focused on the entire layouts of banknote design of world to define generation of banknote design. And with the result of generation definition, I have identified characteristics of these days` banknote design by analyzing nineteen couturies` to make korean banknotes more suitable for a country`s major cultural contents. For the study, I have researched 289 countries` banknotes from banknote archieve site and sort them by historical order. Banknotes are organized historically by 4 generations in design. I have defined 5 characteristics of banknote design of fourth generation from the leading banknote of swiss and netherland. They are variety of color, non-formal layout, ways of using lines, geometrical shape from anti-counterfeit device, cultural expression. I`ve analized nineteen conturies` banknote design with these factor and apply to korean banknote design. Current banknotes of korea contains all the visual features of fourth banknote generation but there is no more obvious difference of layout since 1970s from when it first issued. As a country`s major public media and contents, next banknote design of korea should be more distinctive than that of current issued.
