In today`s fast-paced business environment, companies require multi-talented workers who are qualified for creative thinking as well as integrative problem solving to develop new product and service which meet consumer`s expectation. In order to produce human resources which are more practical in innovative team work, internal and external multidisciplinary design education programs have received attention. Through performance comparative analysis of design graduate students with design backgrounds and non-design backgrounds at H-School, this paper aims to contribute to an understanding of how convergent and multidisciplinary design education has worked and provide practical implications to future design education direction. H-School is the only graduate school in South Korea which provides students from various specialties with a three-year master of design program besides two-yeat master of design program. To assess student performances, course grades and annual salary were used as objective indicators, and professors` evaluation, student`s career (and life) satisfaction level as subjective indicators. The result has shown that non-design undergraduates did better in school and society, and their career satisfaction was greater than the student with design backgrounds. Many participants considered `integrated thinking skill` to be the best advantage of convergent design education. Designers said logical, strategic thinking skills as most valuable competence at work, meanwhile, non-designers picked effective design communication. Student performance can be influenced by diverse factors such as education curriculum, teaching style, environmental elements, and personality. This paper can provide basic data research for further follow-up research to develop an optimal multidisciplinary design education program reflecting students character depending on different major.
