본 연구의 목적은 외국인 관광객이 한국 문화를 보다 쉽게 접하고, 다양한 경험을 할 수 있도록 유도하기 위해 공공시설물의 시각적 요소를 활용하여 기능과 역할을 확장하고, 접근성이 높은 새로운 관광 아이템 개발의 차별화된 방법을 모색하는 데에 있다. 이론적 배경은 국내외 문헌자료와 선행연구를 통해 살펴보았으며, 실증연구는 범위를 국내와 국외로 나누어 현장조사와 인터넷을 통한 자료 수집, 부가기능 활용 측면에 있어 맨홀뚜껑 그래픽의 패턴과 특징을 분석하였다. 연구 결과 국내 맨홀뚜껑의 그래픽은 대부분 기하학적 패턴형에 치중되어 있었으며, 국외 사례와 같이 정보 전달과 커뮤니케이션을 유도하는 관광 아이템으로 활용되기 위해서는 상징형의 도입이 필요하다 판단된다. 더불어 상징적 도식화에 있어 자연 환경과 전통 문화 요소를 활용하고, K-Pop 등을 통한 한류스타의 특징을 접목하는 방안은 새로운 명소를 개발하고, 흥미로운 관광아이템으로 활용되기에 효과적이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 맨홀뚜껑 그래픽의 시각적 기능 확장을 통해 물리적 기능 외에도 다양한 기능을 수반하는 부가적 활용가능성을 제시하여 관광 아이템 개발에 기여하고자 하였다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the extension of the visual functions of public facilities and to develop new tourist items available for Korean culture. It`s specifically meant to improve the accessibility of Korean culture for foreign tourists. Domestic and foreign literature and earlier studies were analyzed, and an experimental research of our country and foreign countries was implemented. An on-the-spot survey was conducted, and data were gathered over the Internet. And then characteristics of the graphics of manhole covers were analyzed to discuss the additional availability of manhole cover graphics. The findings of the study were as follows: Geometric patterns were extremely prevailing in the graphics of domestic manhole covers. The introduction of symbolic graphic seemed to be necessary to develop the covers into tourist items. In terms of schematization, the utilization of natural environments and traditional culture is required, and it will also be effective to capitalize on Hallyu stars o produce intriguing tourist items. In the future, full-scale research should be implemented from diverse angles.
