국어사전은 일정한 규범과 문법의 내용을 제공하는 기능도 담당하고 있다. 특히 규범적인 기준을 제시하고 있는 ``규범 사전``에는 언어생활의 준거가 되는 표기와 문법의 기준이 상세하게 제시되어 있으며 국어사전이 지닌 개방성, 공공성으로 실제 언어생활에서 지침으로 폭넓게 활용되고 있다. 규범 사전에는 어문 규범 및 학교 문법, 기술 문법의 내용이 반영되어 있지만 정서법이나 문법 전문서와는 달리 사전의 특성상 특정한 내용에 대한 관점이나 태도 등을 명확하게 표시되는 것은 아니다. 모든 문법 용어를 제시하고 설명하기 때문에 사전에서 제시하는 관점이 무엇인지 명확하지 않은 경우가 많다. 그렇지만 구체적인 문법 요소를 제시할 수 있고 각 요소의 의미와 용법을 상세하게 보여 준다는 점에서 문법을 탐구하는 방법으로 문법서와 국어사전을 상호 보완적으로 이용하는 방법을 논의할 필요가 있다.

Korean dictionaries also provide us the certain rules and substances of grammar, which is different from it`s original role. Especially ‘standard dictionary’, which contains a prescriptive standard in it`s content, has a concrete standard of orthography and grammar in it, which becomes a base in language life. Because of the standard dictionary`s openness and publicness, it is being used as a guideline widely in real language life. Even the contents of language standard, school grammar and discriptive grammar are written in standard dictionary, it doesn`t contain a viewpoint or attitude towards certain content because of the dictionary`s characteristic, as contrasted with orthorgraphy and grammar books. Because it shows and describes every single grammatical term, standard dictionary usually doesn`t have a clear viewpoint suggested by itself. Nevertheless, considering that it can suggest a concrete grammatical respect and it`s meaning with usage, we need to discuss about how to use grammar books with Korean dictionary in mutually complementary way as a method to study grammars.
