다산(茶山)의 『아학편(兒學編)』의 구성과 뜻풀이를 이해하기 위하여 『아학편』이 어떤 목록(目錄)으로 이루어져 있는지를 우선 살피고, 한자(漢字)들의 구성이 어떻게 되어 있는지를 고찰하고 각각의 한자에 이루어진 뜻풀이가 보이는 특징을 이전 시기의 초학서(初學書)와 비교하여 살펴보았다. 그 결과 『아학편』에는 비록 목록은 제시되어 있지 않지만 다산은 54개 정도에 해당하는 부문(部門)으로 나누고 이 부문별로 한자를 구성하고 이에 걸맞은 뜻풀이를 하고자 노력하였음을 알 수 있었다. 이 과정에서 이전 초학서를 꼼꼼하게 분석하여 이전 초학서와는 달리 그 구성을 간략화하여 윤곽을 제시하는 데에 신경을 써서 필요한 한자만 고르고 이전 초학서에서 빠진 한자는 새로이 제시하였다. 이렇게 제시된 한자들의 구성 방식은 병렬 관계, 유의 관계, 대립 관계에 의한 것으로 정리할 수 있다. 그리고 이런 구성 방식에 어울리게 한자의 뜻풀이를 하고자 한 특징이 보인다. 이 과정에서 이전 초학서의 뜻풀이를 많이 참고하고 그대로 가져다 쓰거나 일부 변형하여 쓰는 경우가 있었고, 어렵거나 생소한 말 대신에 쉽고 익숙한 말로써 뜻풀이를 하는 모습도 보였고, 새로 풀이한 예들도 상당하였다. 그러나 이 과정에서 다른 한자의 뜻풀이에 쓰인 어휘와 품사가 일치하지 않는 것들이 있는데 이것이 당시 언어 현실을 고려하여 뜻풀이를 하는 과정에서 생긴 자연스러운 결과인지 다신이 품사의 일치까지는 충분히 고려하지 못해서 생긴 것인지는 좀 더 살펴봐야 할 필요가 있다.

The aim of this paper is to understand structure and definition in Ahakpyeon written by Jeong Yak-yong. For this aim, I will consider list and definition of Ahakpyeon in a comparative manner with early Chinese character study materials published in before the early 19th century. After a review of the text, I could see the following. First, it has a list of the 54 degree is made up of the sector in Ahakpyeon. Second, each sector is composed according to Chinese characters and the definition of these sectors to be in harmony. Third, the configuration is more compact than previous early Chinese character study materials. Construction of Chinese character can be summarized as parallel relationship, similar relationship or opposite relationship. And configurations that are defined to be a good match. In this process Jeong Yak-yong referred to the previous early Chinese character study materials`s definition and he just brought it used. And he defined as easy and familiar words rather than difficult or unfamiliar words. And he used newly defined words too. However, in the process of solving the meaning of Chinese characters written in a different part of speech does not match the words and things were.
