최근 교양교육에 대한 관심이 높아지고, 인문학을 강조하는 현실 속에서 대학글쓰기 교육은 내용과 형식 등에서 유의미한 성과를 제출하고 있다. 하지만 기술과 형식 위주의 성과는 아니었는지 반문해볼 필요가 있다. 이 글은 이런 반문에 대한 시론(時論)이자 일종의 시론(試論)인바, <대학글쓰기> 교육에 관한 세 가지 관점을 중심으로 반성적으로 고찰하였다. 한국 대학글쓰기의 역사가 일천하긴 하지만 2000년 이후 수사적 관점, 특히 언어적?인지주의적 방법의 성과와 의미는 인정할 만하다. 그러나 과정 중심의 글쓰기 이론과 수사적 기능에 충실해온 대학글쓰기가 기술적?실용적 글쓰기로 고착된 면이 없지 않다. 글쓰기 교육 자체가 매뉴얼처럼 굳어지면서 생활과의 교직성(交織性)이 괴리되는 현상이 나타났다. 게다가 한국 대학의 종속성이 날로 심화되어가는 상황이기 때문에 대학글쓰기 교육 및 연구는 학문 공동체, 직업 공동체, 시민 공동체와 참여-소통하기 위한 사회적 관점이 강화되어야 한다. 이 글이 전개한 반성과 전망은 두 가지 전제가 충족될 때 현실적인 영향력을 행사할 수 있다. 하나는 대학글쓰기가 인문학 본연의 비판성을 회복하는 것이며, 다른 하나는 그것을 글쓰기 교육의 주된 구성요소로 삼는 것이다. 궁극적으로는 대학글쓰기가 지닌 복합학문적 성격을 인정하는 동시에 작문학(作文學, composition studies)이라는 지향을 가져야 한다. 작문학은 학부에서 이루어지는 일반적 학습능력과 대학원에서 이루어지는 전문적 학습 능력을 연계할 수 있는 독자적 영역이기 때문이다. 대학글쓰기가 작문학의 정초를 마련하고 하나의 전공으로 구성될 때 대학글쓰기 교육은 제대로 된 방향을 잡게 될 것이다.

College writing education has been producing significant results in terms of content, form, and environment in the midst of rising interest in liberal arts education and emphasis on humanities in recent years. However, there is also a need to reflect upon whether those improvements are restricted only to technique and form or not. This study thus set out to reflectively examine the so-called "college writing" education introduced in 2000 from three different perspectives as a comment and essay on the issue. In South Korea, the history of college writing is not long, but it is necessary to recognize the achievements and meanings of the rhetorical perspective, in particular, the linguistic and cognitive method, since the 2000s as they are. However, it is also true that college writing has been fixed on technical and practical writing, being loyal to the process-based writing theories and rhetorical functions. In addition, it cannot be ignored that its mixture with life has been broken down as writing itself became stiff like a manual. As the dependency of colleges and universities in the nation has grown worse day after day, it is critical to highlight with importance the need for and urgency of a social perspective to participate in and communicate with the academic, vocational, and civil community. It is also needed to listen carefully to the problems raised from an expressionist perspective even though its theoretical reference is rather weak. The reflection and prospect developed in the study can exercise their influences when two premises are met: college writing should first recover the original threatening quality of humanities-based writing itself and then make it as one of the major components of writing education. Ultimately, college writing should have its complex character recognized and be oriented toward composition studies since composition studies make an independent domain to connect the general learning abilities obtained in the undergraduate program with the professional learning abilities obtained in the graduate program. When college writing lays a cornerstone for composition studies and becomes a major, both college writing and college writing education will set the right directions.
