지금까지 많은 연구들이 척독 교본을 ‘근대적 글쓰기’의 한 예로 삼아 설명하였다. 하지만 근대 척독 교본의 경우 대부분은 ‘언문일치’ 등으로 대표되는 근대적 글쓰기와는 상관성이 약하고 오히려 전근대적인 한자(또는 한문)에 기댄 경우가 더 많았다. 겉으로 봐서는 편지의 유통을 촉진하는 등의 근대적인 성격을 가졌을 것 같지만 실상을 들여다보면 내용이나 표기 수단에 있어서 상당 부분을 전근대성에 기대고 있는 것이다. 따라서 척독 교본을 근대적 글쓰기의 증좌라고 단선적으로 주장하는 것은 잘못되었다는 것이 이 논문의 일차 결론이다. 하지만 비슷한 시기에 출간된 『신찬국문가뎡간독』이나 『신찬국문간독』의 경우로 보자면 다른 한편에서는 분명 한글로 된 편지의 보급을 강조한 측면도 무시할 수 없다. 그러나 이런 척독 교본의 맥이 계속 이어지지 않았다는 점으로 보건대 상업적인 측면에서도 기대만큼의 성과를 거두지 못했던 것으로 보인다. 오히려 이후의 출판 상황으로 보자면 한문에 기반을 둔 척독 교본이 대세였다. 또한 중세적 산물이라는 척독 교본의 경우 근대 시기에도 방각본으로 출판이 된 것으로 보아 척독 교본만으로 중세와 근대를 구분하기는 어렵다. 물론 출판의 형태나 내용에 있어서 일정 정도 시대의 변화를 반영하고는 있지만 중세의 대체품 또는 극복의 결과로 근대 척독 교본이 등장했다고 보기도 어렵다는 것이 또 하나의 결론이다.

The modern letter textbook has been considered as a example of modern writing in many researches. However, modern letter textbooks not necessarily related with modern writing represented the identity of the written and spoken language. It was written by chinese letters not Hangeul. Active commercial publication of modern letter textbook mostly depended on premodern charac teristics in respects of content and means of writing. So, it is difficult that the modern letter textbook regards as a example of modern writing. Around the same time, many Hangeul letter textbooks were published also. It was so complicated situation in the course of transition from premodern to modern. In a word, the publication of modern letter textbooks represented the change of letter culture. It was not replacement of medieval letter textbook but result of transfer to modern times.
