2013년 5월 UN FAO의 식용곤충 보고서는 환경오염 등으로 인한 기후 온난화와 증가하는 지구 인구의 식량 공급 문제를 해결 할 수 있는 가장 경제적이고 지속가능한 방안으로 곤충 식량화를 지목하였다. 우리나라는 이미 2010년에 곤충산업법을 제정하여 곤충 산업화 연구개발 및 산업화를 지원하고 있다. 이 논문은 국내 곤충 식용의 역사와 산업화 가능한 소재 및 그 영양 가치를 소개하고, 곤충 산업화의 경제 사회적 장점을 기존 축산 생산의 환경 효율성 등과 비교하였다. 또한 곤충식품 산업화의 걸림돌이 될 수 있는 요소를 제시함으로써 지속적 식용곤충 산업의 발전 방향을 제시하였다.

Greater attentions are paid to the insect industry (insect farming) specially for the economic, sustainable solution to feed the growing world population following the issue of FAO report of edible forest insect in May 2013. In Korea, legislation of insect industry law provides the funding on the research and commercialization of insect farming. Korea has a long history of entomophagy but most for the medicinal purpose not for the dietary needs. In this review, possible list of edible insects and their nutritional values were discussed. Also the environmental advantage of farming insects to the traditional livestock raising were discussed relative to the global warming and economic production. Lastly some issues hindering the propagation of edible insect farming such as enlisting the official food item and environmental risk management were addressed.
