국내에서는 현재 사료용으로 생산되는 곤충은 귀뚜라미류와 밀웜이 대부분을 차지한다. 사료용 곤충산업의 시장 전망을 구체화 하기는 매우 어려운 실정이나, 선진국과의 비교에서 약 60억 이상의 시장가치가 있다고 예측되었다. 부문별로 보았을 때, 파충류 등 애완동물의 먹이 시장이 약 40여억원대, 양계산업에서 곤충사료의 시장 점유율이 0.5%로 가정할 때, 17.7억원 정도가 추산되었다. 또한 어류 양식용 조사료 또는 배합사료의 첨가물 시장도 충분한 산업적 가치를 가질 것으로 판단되었다. 곤충의 높은 영양적 가치는 단순히 기존 산업영역뿐 아니라 동물원 등 다양한 범위의 동물먹이로 그 시장을 확대할 수 있을 것으로 전망한다.

Insect farming attracts public attention for the commercialization specially in Korea partly because of the government subsidy and support based on the legislation of so-called “insect industry law”. Insects have a high nutritional value of protein, amino acid, vitamin B and suitable for animal feeds following the natural food web. Currently crickets and mealworms are the widely utilized. The market potential has not been properly estimated so far. In this paper, based on the current available information, we estimated the potential market of animal feed by insects as 6 billion KW. Pet animal feed of reptiles comprised mostly, ap. 4 billion KW, followed by the feed for poultry (1.7 billion KW) with only 0.5% acceptable level. Additives to the assorted animal feed or subsidizing to the current animal feed in the fish nusery, or zoo animal can be another high-end market for the insect feed industry.
