본 연구는 다문화 교육을 위한 첫걸음으로 그림자의 인식에 대한 필요성을 제기한다. 그리고 그림자를 소재로 한 두 그림책에서 그림자를 받아들이는 과정을 살피고 다문화 교육을 위한 그림자 인식의 방법과 교육적 의미에 대해 찾아보고자 한다. 이를 통해 오늘날의 다문화 교육에 시사점을 얻을 수 있다. Sleeter(1993)의 논의를 중심으로 다문화 교육의 접근 유형을 알아보고, 사람들이 무의식의 그림자를 대하는 네 가지 방식과 연계하여 살펴본다. 그리고 그림자를 소재로 하는 두 그림책에서 인물이 자신의 그림자를 인식하고 이를 받아들이는 방식을 비교하여 살피고자 한다. 두 그림책에서 그림자를 인식하는 과정이 다문화 교육에서 그림자를 통합하는 과정에 주는 시사점은 다음과 같다. 먼저 그림자를 인정하고 바르게 인식할 수 있어야 한다. 다음은 그림자를 회피하거나 억제하지 않고 자기 안으로 통합하기 위해서 끊임없이 노력해야 한다. 마지막으로 그림자는 자기 삶의 모든 과정에서 함께 해야 할 존재임을 알고 이를 긍정적인 태도로 받아들일 수 있어야 한다.
