이 논문은 독서교육용 텍스트로서 그림책의 가능성을 탐색하고, 향후 독서 교육 분야에서 이루어질 그림책 연구의 방향을 탐색하기 위해, 그림책에 대한 교사들의 인식을 조사한 설문 연구이다. 설문을 통해, 그림책의 개념과 종류, ‘독서교육용 텍스트로서의 그림책`에 대한 교사들의 인식을 확인하였다. 약 200명의 교사들이 설문에 참여하였고, 결측값을 제외한 178명의 설문 결과를 최종 자료로 삼았다. 연구 결과, 교사들은 학교급이나 교과목을 막론하고 그림책의 개념과 종류의 범주를 좁게 인식하고 있었다. 그림책에 대한 교사들의 관심은 초등학교에서 가장 높았으며, 중, 고등학교에서 비슷한 경향을 보였다. 교사들은 독서교육용 텍스트로서 그림책이 지닌 가치에 대해 ‘다양한 반응과 동기 유발`차원에서 높게 평가하였으며, 그림책이 지닌 ‘초기 독서 경험 및 복합양식 텍스트`로서 가치는 낮게 평가하였다. 마지막으로 그림책을 독서교육용 텍스트로 활용해본 경험에 대한 응답은 학교급이 올라갈수록 감소하였다. 이 논문은 이와 같은 인식을 바탕으로 그림책과 관련된 다양한 연구가 필요함을 제안한다.

This paper investigated Korean teachers` perceptions on Picture book. Teachers` perceptions on reading material is a very important factor in the selection of instructional text. And it has a strong influence on students` reading experience. Consequently this quantitative study examined 1) teachers` perceptions on the concept and types of Picture book, 2) teachers` perceptions on Picture book as reading educational materials. Data were collected from teachers` survey. This study showed that teachers have narrow perceptions of the concept and types of Picture book, regardless of their subjects and school levels. Elementary school teachers have the highest interest in Picture book. Teachers have high value of Picture book in terms of various responses and motivation. However, few teachers perceived value about early reading experience and multimodality of Picture book. Teachers had a little experience of using Picture book as reading instruction materials because of the lack of information about using picture book. Implications and ideas were suggested for further research on Picture book in teaching reading at school.
