본 연구는 학습을 위한 쓰기의 대표적 유형인 설명적 글쓰기와 설득적 글쓰기에서 대학생 필자들이 어떻게 자료를 활용하는지 분석하는 것을 목표로 삼았다. 연구 결과, 대학생 필자들은 설명적 글쓰기를 할 때보다 설득적 글쓰기를 할 때 학술 논문이나 기사, 뉴스 자료를 더욱 많이 활용하는 것으로 드러났다. 이러한 결과는 설득적인 글의 내용에는 주관성이 더 많이 반영되어도 된다는 참여자들의 판단에 기인한 것이었다. 또한 참여자들은 글을 쓰기 위한 자료를 선택할 때, 자료의 신뢰성, 자료 내 정보와 쓰기 과제에서 요구되는 정보의 일치도, 자료 내 정보의 형식, 자료의 생성 시기, 자료에 대한 접근성, 자료에 대한 개인 필자의 이해도에 영향을 받는 것으로 드러났다. 특히 인터넷 자료의 경우 접근성이 좋은 관계로 빈번하게 사용되었지만, 참여자들이 신뢰하기 어려워하는 것으로 꼽히기도 하였다. 연구 결과를 통해, 학생들이 목적에 맞는 자료를 충분히 활용할 수 있도록 돕는 환경을 조성하고 능숙하게 자료를 활용해 글을 쓸 수 있는 방법을 교육할 필요가 있음을 알 수 있다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways college student writers use sources in expository writing and persuasive writing which are typical writing to learn. This study found out that college students used more research thesises, articles or new materials when they write persuasive texts than write expository texts. This result came from participants` awareness that authority can be included in persuasive texts` contents. And participants were influenced by reliability of sources, type of match, forms of information in sources, publication date of sources, accessibility of sources, individual writers` comprehension of sources when they select information from sources to compose. Especially, participants used sources from internet frequently because of the accessibility, on the other hand, they could not trust the quality of sources from internet. This indicates that students need conditions to help them to use sources for their writing purpose and that educators should teach stuents to use sources proficiently to compose.
