고전연극(古典演劇)은 연극이면서 문학이다. 고전연극은 민간전승의 연극이며, 음악·무용·연기·언어 등이 조화된 종합예술이면서, 한편으로는 구비문학(口碑文學)이다. 고전연극은 일찍이 1920년대에 학문적 관심의 대상이 되었다. 그러나 고전연극의 기원과 역사적 전개 양상, 연극적 형식, 주제와 사회의식, 예술적 측면에 관한 연구가 활발하게 이루어진 데 비해, 고전연극 교육에 대한 논의는 부족했다. 특히 중등교육에 해당하는 중·고등학교 학생들을 대상으로 한 연구는 미미했다. 고전연극 교육은 구비문학 교육, 문학교육에 속한다. 고전문학 교육 중에서도 고전시가와 고전소설 교육이 아닌 구비문학 교육에 대한 논의는 부족했다. 구비문학은 고전문학이나 현대문학 못지않게 충분한 교육적 가치가 있으므로 문학교육의 주된 대상으로 삼아야 한다는 당위성은 끊임없이 제기되어왔고 교육과정에도 명시되어 있지만, 현실은 그렇지 못했다. 특히 공연과 전승 현장, 연구물을 통해 설계되고 실천되어야 하는 고전연극 교육에 대한 논의는 실종 됐다. 이 논문은 중·고등학교 교육 중 심화된 문학교육이 이루어지는 고등학교 문학 과목을 중심으로, 고전연극 교육의 현황을 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 교육과정 변천에 따라 개정된 문학교과서를 분석해서 고전연극이 문학교육에 어떻게 수용되고 있는가를 검토해 보았다. 이는 아직 체계적으로 정리되지 않았던 고전연극의 위상과 활용 양상을 살피는 것이고, 더 나아가 문학교육에 내재한 고전연극에 대한 인식을 확인하여 고전연극에 대한 바람직한 수용 방식을 모색하기 위한 것이다. 하지만 교과서 검토만으로는 고전연극을 학습하고 교육하는 주체인 학생과 교사의 고전연극 교육에 대한 인식을 분석하고 전망을 모색하는 데는 제한이 따른다. 따라서 현재 서울 소재 인문계 일반고등학교 학생들과 교사들을 대상으로 고전연극 교육에 관한 설문 조사를 실시했다. 바람직한 고전연극 교육은 공연에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 해야 한다. 공연에 대한 적극적인 이해와 체험은 삶의 지평을 확대하는 계기가 되고 문화를 향유 할 수 있는 기틀을 제공해주기 때문이다. 이를 위해서는 학교 안에서 예술 교육을 확대해 나가기 위해 교육의 여러 주체가 힘을 모아야 한다. 고전연극은 민간전승의 종합 예술 형태이므로 국문학뿐만 아니라 민속학, 무용, 미술, 음악 희곡, 연극, 민속문화, 무형문화재 등의 분야에서도 연구와 교육의 대상이 된다. 따라서 고전연극 교육을 위해서는 문학교육, 음악교육, 연극교육, 민속교육 등과 같은 여러 분야의 학문이 서로의 연구 성과를 공유하고 통합하는 노력이 요구된다.

Classical drama is a play and also a literature. It is a folkloric play, composite art and on the other hand, it`s oral literature. Classical drama was a focus of academic interest in 1920. But the study of the origin of classical drama and its aspect of historical development, a form of a play, topic and social consciousness and an artistic side were actively accomplished. But the discussion of classical drama education was not enough. Especially the study of secondary education, for middle and high school students, was insignificent Classical drama education is included in oral literature education and literature education. Oral literature education has enough educational value as classical literature or current literature, so it should be the main subject of the literature education. Although these theories were constantly brought up and it is clarified in the education process, the reality was different. This study focused on high school literature courses, examined the status of classical theater education. According to the curriculum, the revised literature textbooks were analyzed. This shows how the desired acceptance in literature education. Desirable classical theater education should be focused on the actual performance. Active understanding and experience in the performing arts is very important in the literature education. Schools to expand arts education in the schools should do your best.
