바람직한 문학교육의 기본은 좋은 문학작품을 선정하여 학습자들에게 적절한 언어로 번역한 후 그들의 유의미한 성장에 기여할 수 있는 감상의 가교를 놓아주는 일일 터다. 더구나 언어의 문제에서부터 작품이 산출된 역사적 지반의 영역에 이르기까지 지금과는 상이한 배경을 갖고 있는 고전문학의 경우 이러한 작업은 필수적이다. 본 논문에서는 최치원의 <추야우중>과 <제가야산독서당>을 일례로 하여, 문학교과서 및 교사용지도서에서 이러한 기본적인 문제들이 어떻게 소개되고 있는지를 비판적으로 검토한 후 이에 대한 나름의 대안을 제시하고자 하였다. 우리는 삶의 국면들마다 이상과 현실 사이의 끊임없는 괴리를 당면하게 된다. 더구나 남들보다 빼어난 능력 덕에 이상에의 도달 가능성이 비교적 높은 경우 바로 그 가능성의 크기만큼 현실과의 거리는 멀어지게 마련이다. 오늘 우리가 살펴본 최치원의 경우가 그러했다. 두 작품 속에 보이는 최치원의 모습은 궁핍한 현실의 무게를 온전히 짊어진, 또 하나의 ``나``이다. ``최치원``이라는 역사 속 偉人 역시 삶의 무게로 인해 힘겨워하고 괴로워했음을 공감하는 것, 이는 그것 자체만으로도 소중한 체험일 것이다.
