This article mainly discusses the difference of the meaning and function of the adverb mou between Meiji and modern Japanese. In the use of mou to indicate temporal or quantitative(i.e. addition in terms of quantity or amount) meaning, no significant difference is seen between in Meiji and modern Japanese. However, in modern Japanese, the interjectional usage of mou that expresses the speaker’s feelings is observed to be inclined to increase. In modern colloquial Japanese, mou appears at endings of sentences or stands alone as an utterance only to express the speaker’s feelings. Furthermore, mou can be used as forms like mattakumou which is combined with other interjections. The signs of interjectional usage of mou in modern Japanese were already shown in Meiji Japanese, which might be brought out the semantic complexity of mou indicating both temporal meaning and speaker’s evaluation/feelings.
