‘오성과 한음’은 선조와 광해군 초기까지 국가적으로 어려운 시기에 외교와 국방, 행정에 이르기까지 국가의 주요 요직을 맡아서 국난극복에 기여한 인물이다. 이순신처럼 무장은 아니었지만, 병조판서를 번갈아 맡아서 임란과 정유재란을 진두지휘했던 ‘구국의 영웅’이다. 여기에 그들의 평생에 걸친 ‘지기지우(知己之友)’로서의 행적은 포천을 비롯하여 전국적으로 많은 설화를 양산해 내기도 하였다. 그런데 정작 그들의 관계가 구체적으로 어떠했는지에 대해서는 단편적인 언급을 제외하고는 아직까지 명쾌하게 정리된 바가 없다. 따라서 이 글은 이들의 교유를 공적 교유(公的交遊)와 사적 교유(私的交遊)로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이러한 연구는 인물설화의 전승과 전파의 저력을 이해하고, 전해지는 다양한 ‘오성과 한음’ 설화를 올바로 수용하는 데에 일조할 것으로 기대되기 때문이다. 이들의 본격적인 교유는 둘이 같은 해(1580년)에 약간의 시차로 과거에 급제하면서 시작된다. 이후 34년 동안 벼슬길에서 둘은 앞서거니 뒤서거니 하면서 비슷한 관직을 번갈아 맡으면서 교유를 갖는다. 관직생활 중에도 유배나 사직으로 인한 공백 기간이 거의 없다는 점도 공통적이다. 오성은 상대적으로 행정 실무에 밝았고, 한음은 문장력으로 인정을 받았다. 이후 두 사람은 국가의 온갖 대소사(大小事)에 항상 뜻을 같이 하면서 서로를 끌어주고 밀어주는 관계를 이어 나갔다. 한음이 오성에게 보낸 77편의 편지를 분석한 결과, 약간은 한음이 오성에게 의지하는 일방적인 교유의 양상을 보였다. 편지의 내용은 사적인 안부를 묻는 것은 드물고, 대체로 공적인 사안에 대해 자신의 입장을 토로하고 나서 오성의 의견을 개진하는 것이 주를 이룬다. 그렇지만 때로는 오성의 처신에 서운함을 직설적으로 드러내기도 하고, 날카로운 비판을 서슴지 않는 모습도 보여준다. 이는 성장 환경과 기질, 나이 등의 차이에서 기인하는 것으로 판단된다. 친구이면서도 대등한 관계라기보다는 형과 아우 같이 서로 존중하면서 예의를 갖추는 사이였다.
‘Oseung and Haneum’ had contributed to overcome the national crisis having responsibility the important positions such as international affairs, defence and administration when the country was in the serious situation till King Sunjo and the beginning of Gwanghe gyun. Even though they are not a general like Lee Sun Sin, they are heros saved the country by taking the responsibility of defence alternatively conducting the wars Imjin and Jeungyou. And their good friendship during their life made a lot of tales in Pocheon and the whole country. But there is no obvious study to define clearly their relationship except some fragment studies. So this study searches their relationship depending on the classification of public relationship and private one. Since this study would expect to contribute to understand the transition power of the tale on person and to accept correctly the tale on Oseung and Haneum. Their authentic relationship began from gwageo geupjae in the same year 1580. Henceforth, for 34 years, they have had good relationship having responsibility similar positions in the government back and forth. They are also same that there were any blanks because of retirement or exile during their public life. Oseung was better relatively good at administration affairs and Haneum was accepted for his writing. Henceforth they had sustained their good relationship supporting each other with same idea in various national affairs. As the result of analysing 77 letters sending to Oseung by Haneum, it shows that Haneum is a little bit more depends on Oseung in their friendship. Almost all of their letters are about exchanging their ideas on official affairs and the letters asking hello in privet are relatively rare. However, sometimes Haneum reveals directly his mind disappointing on Oseung`s attitude and shows criticizing sharply without any hesitation. As I know, that is because of the difference of their grown up circumstance, the character and the age. Even though they are friends but they respect and polite each other rather than an equal relationship.
