본고는 신석초의 시에 나타난 고향의 의미를 추출하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 일찍이 노장사상을 섭렵한 그는 어느 한 곳에 머무르지 않고 지속적으로 새로움을 찾아 유랑하였다. 그의 문학의 시원(始原)이자 시발점인 고향 서천을 원점(原點)으로 하여 발레리와 사회주의 사상을 접하였고, 신라와 백제의 유적을 찾아 민족정신을 담아내려고 하였다. 또한 그는 이 과정에서 서구와 동양, 전통과 현대의 조화를 꾀하기도 하였다. 그의 시에 나타난 고향의 의미도 이와 무관하지 않다. 그의 작품에서 고향의 편린들을 찾아보기가 쉽지 않다. 사후에 발간된 『비가집(秘歌集)』을 비롯하여 몇몇 시집에서 발견할 수 있다. 그 이유로 한국전쟁으로 인해 아들을 잃고 천석꾼의 토지까지 빼앗긴, 기억하고 싶지 않은 고향에 대한 상처를 들 수 있다. 그러나 분명한 것은 그럼에도 그의 시에 고향에 대한 무의식적 욕망과 고향에 대한 그리움의 징후들이 담긴 작품들이 적잖게 발견된다는 점이다. 그의 시 이면에 고향에 대한 무의식적 욕망이 숨겨져 있거나 고향의 의미가 확장되어 다른 모습으로 나타난 것을 볼 수 있다. 따라서 그의 시에 투영된 고향의 모습은 고향에 대한 단순한 재현이 아니라 고향의 의미가 확장시켜 나아간다는 점에서, 그리고 한국전쟁으로 인한 생채기(상처)의 고향을 뛰어넘어 그리움의 고향으로 나아가고 있다는 점에서 다른 시인들과 차별된다고 할 수 있다.
This paper is to extract the means of hometown in Sinseokcho`s poetry. From early on, he mastered Nojangsasang(Lao-tzu and Zhuangzi ideology) and instead of staying in one place, he constantly wandered around to find novelty. Based on his hometown Seocheon(서 천) which is the origin of his literary starting point, he came in contact with Valery, Paul and socialist ideology. He explored Silla and Baekje`s historic relics in order to discover the racial spirits. In this process, he also tried to blend western and orient, tradition and modernity. The meaning of hometown in his poetry is not irrelevant the above. It is not easy to find fragmental memory of his hometown in his works. A small portion of it can be found in only a few of his poems including 『Bigajip(秘歌集)』 which was published posthumously. The cause of it can be the results of the fact that he did not want to remember the wounds of the war which was a dreadful memory of losing his son and all of his land. Nevertheless, it is clear that there are quite a few signs of unconscious desire and longing for hometown in his works. In his works, unconscious desire of longing for hometown is hidden and the meaning of hometown is extended through another image in different aspect. Thus, it can be said that the appearance of hometown in his poetry is not just to reproduce hometown but to extend the meaning of hometown and heading for nostalgic hometown by moving beyond the trauma caused by Korean war is what differentiates his works from others.
