권환은 우리 근대문학사에서 대가다운 풍모를 보여준 문학인 가운데 한 사람이다. 그는 나라잃은시기와 광복기를 거치면서 특수하게 형성된 우리 겨레의 시대현실과 끊임없이 맞서면서, 현실 극복을 위한 실천적 의지를 다양한 문학갈래를 통해 드러내 보여주었다. 이로써 그는 우리 근대문학사에서 계급주의 문학의 전형적인 본보기로서 자리를 분명히 굳히고 있다. 이 글은 권환의 삶과 문학 가운데서도 상대적으로 관심을 받지 못한 채 묻혀 있었던 카프 활동과 계급주의 아동문학의 면모를 살피는 데 목표를 두었다. 이에 글쓴이는 권환의 카프 활동과 계급주의 아동매체인 『신소년』과 『별나라』를 중심으로 이루어졌던 그의 작품 활동과 그 됨됨이를 살펴보았다. 그리고 그의 소년소설과 소년시, 그리고 기타 산문 작품들을 대상으로 계급주의 아동문학적 특성에 대해 구체적으로 구명하고자 했다. 첫째, 권환의 문학행보는 카프 활동과 아동문학에서 비롯된다. 그가 카프에 정식으로 가입한 시기는 1929년 5월이었다. 하지만 그의 문학활동은 카프 결성 무렵인 1925년 7월 『신소년』에 작품을 발표하면서부터 시작되었다. 그는 주로 아동매체 『신소년』과 『별나라』를 중심으로 소년소설과 소년시를 비롯해 여러 산문들을 다양하게 게재하고 있다. 그의 아동문학은 계급주의 관점에서 식민지 현실과 모순 상황을 다각도로 담아내려는 노력을 아끼지 않았다. 그런 만큼 권환의 계급주의 아동문학은 카프의 운명과 맥을 같이하며 든든하게 자리잡아가는 궤적을 고스란히 보여주었다. 둘째, 권환의 아동문학은 계급적 아동관에 바탕을 두고 무산계급과 현장성의 실천과정을 잘 담아내고 있다. 이는 구체적으로 식민지 아동들이 겪고 있었던 가난 체험의 실상과 그에 대한 현실인식을 담아낸 소년소설, 식민지 현실과 가족의식을 보여주었던 소년시, 무산아동들의 계몽과 교육을 위한 구체적인 계급의식을 담아 내고 있는 산문들에서 뚜렷하게 드러나고 있다. 특히 그의 아동문학은 나라잃은시기의 현실 속에서 끊임없이 갈망하던 계급주의 세계관을 보여주었다. 이렇듯 권환의 계급주의 아동문학은 카프의 시인이자 비평가로 널리 알려진 그의 문학적 이력과 행보를 더욱 풍성하게 만들어준다. 그의 카프 활동과 문학행보는 우리나라 계급주의 문학의 전형으로 설정될 수 있다는 점에서 문학사적 의미를 찾을 수 있다. 특히 아동매체 『신소년』과 『별나라』를 중심으로 이루어졌던 그의 아동문학은 우리나라 계급주의 아동문학이 나아가고자 했던 방향을 여러 갈래에 걸쳐 보여준 값진 업적이라 하겠다.
