아렌트의 『칸트 정치철학 강의』는 칸트의 철학을 토대로 재구성된 것이지만, 결과적으로 칸트의 논의에 얼마나 부합하는가에 대한 논쟁이 이어져 왔다. 주류적인 칸트 해석자들의 관점은 아렌트의 칸트 해석은 근본적으로 칸트의 정치철학적인 기획과 달리하므로 칸트의 논의 내에서는 수용될 수 없다는 입장이다. 이와는 반대로 아렌트의 해석을 수용하는 관점은 아렌트의 해석을 통해 칸트의 정치철학이 새로운 가능성을 발견하게 되었다고 평가하는 입장이다. 나는 아렌트의 판단이론과 칸트 해석을 통해, 그간 주목받지 못했던 칸트의 정치철학에 내재한 역동성과 현실 적합성이 드러나게 되었다고 본다. 물론 이러한 관점을 취한다고 해서 전통적으로 이해되어 온 칸트의 정치철학이 도전받는 것은 아니며, 이 양자는 칸트의 철학에서 양립 가능하다고 할 수 있다. 취미판단으로서 칸트의 판단이론(theory of judgement)은 선험적인 미학(transzendental aesthetics)의 가능성에 관한 것이지만, 아렌트가 시도한 정치적인 독해의 가능성도 인정될 수 있다. 아렌트가 주목한 정치적인 독해의 지점은 공통감과 세계시민적 권리의 결합으로서 인간의 정치적인 실존이 구명된다는 점이다. 이로부터 전통적으로 이해되어 온 칸트의 정치철학의 결함이 보완될 수 있다. ‘쓰이지 않은 칸트의 정치철학’을 재구성하려는 아렌트의 보완이란 실천이성과 법이론을 통한 정치철학의 이해라는 기존의 방식에 덧붙여, 자율적인 시민정치의 가능성을 말하는 것이다.
After Hannah Arendt`s Lectures on Kant`s Political Philosophy, two sorts of claims have been made from different perspectives. First, according to the main Kantians, Arendt`s interpretation of Kant`s philosophy cannot be regarded as appropriate because of her basic assumptions and approaches that are totally different from theirs. On the other hand, a few hold that her claims suggest a new possible interpretation of Kant`s political philosophy and this new interpretation uncover dynamic aspects of Kant`s philosophy. Arguing for the second position, I clarify Arendt`s claim that our political existence can be manifested by virtue of the connection between sensus communis and the cosmopolitan human right. The connection was originally made by Kant himself but has not been noticed before Arendt`s new interpretations. So Arendt`s enterprise of finding a new original ground of politics could be evaluated as a success. Assuming that Arendt`s enterprise is successful, the followings can be said: first, we now have two viable versions of interpretations of Kant`s political philosophy, and, second, at the same time, the first interpretation, made by the main Kantians who maintain that Kant`s political philosophy is possible only through both practical reason and philosophy of law, may be complemented.
