메리 월스톤크래프트는 당시 사회의 여성성 개념을 공화주의자들이 부패라고 규정한 사회적 세태와 관련시켜 해체시키려고 했다. 그녀는 왜곡된 젠더를 강요하는 상업 사회의 부패에 맞서 여성들은 감각적 삶을 추구하지 말고 정신적 존재로서 자신을 자각해야 자신들의 시민성을 확보할 수 있다고 주장했다. 여성들은 자신들의 고유한 시민적 의무인 모성의 의무를 수행해 남성들과 평등한 우애 관계를 맺게 되면 향후 시민적 평등을 정치적으로 확보할 수 있다는 것이다. 이렇듯 그녀의 페미니즘은 시민적 평등을 추구하는 공화주의적 담론세계 안에서 당시의 여성 문제를 진단하고 그 처방을 제시한 것이었다. 또한 그녀는 당시 여성의 상태를 노예제에 비유해 여성이 추구해야 할 자유가 무엇인지를 제시했다. 왜곡된 젠더를 생산하는 구조적 지배에 저항하지 않는다면 남성들로부터 간섭받지 않는다고 해서 혹은 우연히 좋은 여건 속에서 자기가 하고 싶은 것을 할 수 있다고 해서 여성들이 자유로운 것은 아니라고 그녀는 역설했다. 이를 통해 자유를 단순히 간섭의 부재가 아니라 비지배로 보는 공화주의가 페미니즘에 기여했음을 알 수 있다.

Mary Wollstonecrft tried to destruct the conception of feminity in the connection of republican criticism of the corruption in commercial society which extorted the perverted gender. She insisted that women were able to obtain their citizenship by recognizing themselves not as effeminate sensual beings but as virtuous spiritual ones. She asked strongly women to fulfill their proper maternal duty which entitled them citizenship and friendship with men as equals. In addition, She suggested the republican conception of freedom as non-domination which women had to pursue by using the term of slavery to describe women`s situation. She showed women that they were not free only because they were not interfered by men and on occasion they were positioned to be able to do what they pleased. Freedom for women was possible, according to her, only when they struggled against structural domination not to be dominated. Thus her feminism was discoursed and nurtured in the context of republicanism to prescribe for women`s problem at that time.
