We present the design of an interactive particle system for the media art work In Vivo-Silico which is inspired by the interaction of diatoms with their environments. The system detects and recognizes spectators` gesture patterns using a real-time range image sensor, and generates interactive 3D motions of artificial diatom particles. In a virtual 3D space, particles of various diatomaceous forms float randomly, evade spectators` hands, gather around the bodies, and explode away from the bodies depending on the gestures. Spectators watch their bodies being displayed with groups of voxels, control their viewpoints of the 3D scene using their gestures, and communicate intuitively with the diatom particles. The artistic and technical design issues and system implementation are fully described in this paper.
