본 논문의 목적은 영화포스터를 스토리텔링의 관점에서 분석하는 것이 가능한지 고찰하는 데 있다. 포스터 디자인의 기본적인 기능은 영화에 대한 정보를 전달해 대중의 흥미를 유발하는 것이며, 그 안에는 영화의 스토리텔링이 반영되기 마련이다. 하지만 모든 포스터가 동일한 정도로 스토리텔링을반영하는 것은 아니다. 스토리텔링은 극의 서사적 내용은 물론 인물, 조명효과, 음향 효과, 편집, 자막 등의 내용 전달 방식까지 포괄하는 개념이다. 본 논문은 포스터 디자인이 스토리텔링의 다양한 측면을 어느 정도로 반영하고 있는지를 분석하기 위해 2004년 이후 개봉한 한국 영화 중 흥행 순위50위 안에 든 영화들을 선정해 해당 포스터들을 분석했다. 포스터 이미지는 스토리텔링의 관점에서 볼 때 인물이미지형, 캐릭터소개형, 배경 및 상황제시형, 사건함축형, 설명형이라는 5가지 유형으로 분류될 수 있다. 이 중스토리텔링을 충실히 반영할 수 있는 유형은 배경 및 상황 제시형과 사건함축형이며, 나머지 세 유형은 스토리텔링의 반영 정도가 빈약한 것으로 분석되었다. 배우의 인지도에 대한 지나친 의존을 피하고 각 영화의 스토리텔링에 대한 관객의 관심과 기대를 모으기 위해서는 사건함축형 포스터 디자인이 적합한 것으로 판단된다.

Purpose of this article is that show the possibility of analyzing movie posters from storytelling perspective. Basically, movie poster has to give information of the movie and arouse the audience`s interest, thus the movie poster has to contain storytelling of the movie. However, this not means that all movie posters contain the storytelling on the same level. The concept of storytelling includes variety methods of communication for example, the story of movie, the effect of lighting, editing and subtitles. This article analyze posters of the movies that premiered since 2004, and have been ranked in Top 50 to show how the movie posters contain storytelling aspect of design. This article suggest 5 types of the movie posters; Character image type, Character-Introduction type, Background & Situation-Suggestion type, Event-Implication type and Explanation type. Background & Situation-Suggestion type, Event-Implication type contain high level storytelling meanwhile, the others reflect low level. This article implicate that to avoid excessive dependance on actor, and to arouse audience`s interest to storytelling of the movie, Background & Situation-Suggestion type, Event-Implication type are effective.
