The purpose of this study is to explain the distribution of Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) in Korean based on the veridicality theory. Zwarts(1995) and Giannakidou(1999, 2001, 2006) provide an account for English NPIs by making use of the notions ‘verticality’. ‘anti-verticality’, and ‘non-verticality’. While assuming that this line of approach is on the right track, this paper attempts to analyze the distribution of ‘amwu-N-to’, ‘amwu-N-(i)lato’ and ‘amwu-N-(i)na’. I claim that ‘amwu-N-to’ is licensed in anti-vertical contexts, whereas ‘amwu-N-(i)lato’ is licensed in non-veridical contexts, and ‘amwu-N-(i)na’ is licensed even in vertical contexts as well as non-veridical and anti-veridical contexts.
