Kim (2012) claims that if non-contrasting propositions are connected with the connective nuntey ‘while’, the sentence becomes infelicitous since that connective is an adversative conjunction. However, there may be examples which are also infelicitous when the coordinator- ko ‘and’ is used instead of nuntey. In this vein, Kim`s (2012) grammaticalization that the propositions A and B connected with nuntey should have contrasting meaning is not an if-and-only-if condition for the use of the contrastive nun-marked element. Contrastive nun-marked elements are only used in the position where contrastiveness is assigned when two non-contrasting propositions are connected with the connective ciman/nuntey or even with the coordinator ko ‘and’. The contrastive nun-marked sentence-initial element in the subsequent clause of the ciman/nuntey construction induces the sentence to hold contrasting propositions. The contrastive nun-marked element should be in the Spec of a phase (Spec of vP or CP) where the output effect of contrastiveness is assigned.
