This paper is focused on analyzing Yeonam Park Jiwon`s (1737~1805) Oksaeron ‘theory of the Royal Seal’to explicate its thematic consciousness. Furthermore, this paper compares and examines it with Yeonam`s other works to shed light on their correlations. Oksaeron is one of the three ‘Ron`s’ that Yeonam wrote. It is so brilliant that it was contained in Kim Taek-yeong`s Ryeohansipgamuncho, but there have been no independent papers addressing the essay in the scholastic realm. Oksaeron is divided into a total of six parts. Its superficial theme claims that you should have virtues rather than being attached to the Royal Seal, just a kind of treasure. However, given Yeonam`s writing style in which he does not accommodate bibles` authorities but revise them in a novel way based on his own intention, the Royal Seal in Oksaeron has profound contexts beyond the meaning of the ‘infinity of power.’ We often find essays in Yeonam`s literary collections that contain his usual criticism of inscription. As a result of a general analysis of such essays, it can besaid that Yeonam tried to how void it is to inscribe something. Chapter 3 grasps Oksaeron in the epistemic dimension by showing Yeonam`s view of inscription. Chapter 4 pays attention to the time when Yeonam created Oksaeron. Though it was problematic at that time that innumerous Royal Seals were produced in the national dimension, the state of Joseon at that time tried to restore its pride as Little China by looking for traces of Ming`s Royal Seals in a way of arranging the theory of Joseon`s fidelity for Ming. Yeonam, feeling a deep concern with such a situation, criticized the theories justice and Joseon`s fidelity for Ming, which the Royal Seals stood for. Also, the form and theme of Oksaeron were inherited and varied by Hwanggeumdaegi in Yeolhailgi. Hwanggeumdaegi provides a novel basis for understanding Oksaeronas the former is much like the latter in the sides of its causal structure and thematic recognition. To summarize, on the basis of its recognition of the vanity of inscription beyond superficial meanings, Oksaeron is an essay that contains a ‘multilayered’ thematic recognition criticizing the vain justice symbolized by the Royal seal.
