Currently, most of the theoretical discourses about plagiarism produced by the academic community are focused on ethical problems. But adhering to the ethical point of view only points out the absence of moral in plagiarism and regulates it as an subject of conviction. This perspective also blocks the way to an in-depth understanding of this complicated phenomenon such as how and why this custom of plagiarism could lasted for such a long time in Korea``s translating history, what translating ideology was behind this complex phenomenon, or if it is proper to consider a simply plagiarized book as the same as a book plagiarizing its precedent translated copies but that has been improved. This article deviates from the ethical point of view concerning plagiarism and contemplates plagiarism as a special phenomenon in Korea``s translation history. It aims to reveal the tight relationship between this tenacious custom and the distinctive translating ideology formed in the modern enlightenment period.
