김명순은 우리나라 최초의 여성 작가이자 신학문을 교육한 여성 1세대로서 나혜석, 김일엽과 함께 1920년대 신여성을 대표한다. 김명순은 당시의 신여성답게 전통 사회에 저항하여 여성의 새로운 자아정체성을 정립하고자 하였다. 김명순은 근대에서의 여성의 지위와 역할에 관심을 기울였고 여성을 질곡하는 가장 주된 요소가 여성을 희생적이고 종속적 존재로 간주하는 봉건적 대가족제도라고 여겼다. 김명순을 비롯한 신여성들이 주창한 자유연애와 연애결혼은 이러한 봉건적 대가족제도를 무너뜨리고 근대적 가족 제도를 확립하기 위한 매개에 해당되었다. 김명순은 여성이 남성 중심적인 제도에 의해 억압되지 않으며 여성의 이상과 재능을 실현할 수 있기를 꿈꾸었다. 이러한 신여성으로서의 의식을 실현하는 과정에서 김명순은 누군가에 의해 상처를 입었다고 하는 피해의식을 지니게 된다. 그는 자신의 뜻을 펼치려 하나 이를 방해하고 가로막는 특정 존재가 있음을 폭로한다. 이러한 의식은 김명순의 사회에 대한 비판의식과 동전의 양면을 이룬다. 김명순은 그의 시에서 사회의 부조리함과 부패함을 비판한다. 더욱이 김명순에게 사회의 부조리는 전통적인 사회로부터 내려오던 여성 소외적이고 남성 중심적인 사회 구조로부터 비롯된다고 본다. 김명순에게 근대화된 조선은 여전히 가부장적인 사회로 다가온다. 한편 여느 신여성들에게 그러하듯 김명순에게 역시 자유연애와 사랑은 여성의 해방을 위한 방법에 해당하는 것으로 간주된다. 김명순은 사랑에 대해 숭고함과 최고의 가치를 부여한다. 그는 사랑에 관한 이상주의적 관점을 지닌다. 그러나 김명순을 비롯한 신여성들의 이와 같은 관점은 현실의 가부장적 제도 속에서 곧 한계에 부딪힌다. 신여성들이 이상으로 여겼던 자유연애와 사랑은 관념일 뿐 현실과 조화되지 못하고 만다. 김명순의 시에 나타난 내면의식들은 신여성으로서의 자의식과 함께 그것들이 당시 시대와 일치하지 못하였음을 잘 말해준다.

Kim Myeong-sun is the representative modern woman in 1920s. She created a lot of works like poem, novel, essay compared to man writer in the same period. But she didn``t estimated well due to her radical feminism. 1920s`` modern women focused on the free love and the modern marriage. In those days Korean women``s life was very painful of the traditional family system. The modern women thought the free love and the modern marriage system could free women from harsh life. So 1920s`` modern girls`` opinion was somewhat radical. In the poetry of Kim Myeong-sun, there is such a modern women``s identity sense. Kim Myeong-sun concentrated effort to establish women``s identity. Her consciousness is caused by the character of modern women. At first, Kim Myeong-sun had the victim mentality, which was the sense related to men-center society. She felt herself was a victim of the unreasonable society system. Therefore she has the critical mind against the society. For Kim Myeng-sun Korea at that time was rotten and oppressive. That is, Korean society system was a patriarchy. Kim Myeong-sun expressed her opinion of the Korean system in her poems. And she thought love of the exit for women liberation. Because love was directly related to the modern marriage system and love could guarantee the women``s right. Kim Myeong-sun regarded love as ideal condition. Such a Kim Myeong-sun``s consciousness show well 1920s`` women``s reality and dream. But women``s dream for liberation and happiness was frustrated. It was due to the inconsistency between free love and marriage system.
