이 논문은 <월인석보>의 본문과 권두삽화 <팔상도>를 비교 고찰하여, 텍스트의 정체성과 후대에 끼친 문화적 영향력을 살펴본 것이다. <월인석보>는 워낙 왕실의 불교적 발원을 위해 탄생한 <석보상절>과 <월인천강지곡>을 합본한 텍스트로서, 석존의 전생과 일대기뿐만 아니라 다양한 이야기를 포함하고 있다. 한편 부처의 일대기를 여덟 개의 장면으로 공식화한 <팔상도>는 <월인석보> 이후 우리나라만의 독자적인 도상을 형성하게 된 내력이 있다. 이들 <월인석보>의 문학과 그림은 정보의 양으로 보면 문학이 압도적일 것으로 추측할 수 있지만, 한 데 살펴본 결과 그림은 텍스트와 초반 및 후반과연계됨으로써 전체적인 틀로서 작용했다. 그리고 또한 그림은 세부적인 본문의 내용과 관련을 맺으면서도, 취사선택한 장면을 상징적으로 부각시킨 것을 알 수 있었다. 그 결과 불균형을 예상할 수 있는 문학과 그림이 제 고유영역을 유지하며 공존하는 <월인석보>는 통합적인 성격과 개별적인 성격을동시에 지니는 작품이라는 점에서 정체성을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 이러한 개별적인 역량이 후대에 독자적인 장르로서 발현되는 가운데 다양한 계층을 위한 새로운 문화적 실현이 가능했음을 알 수 있었다.

This paper aims at study for Wol-in-seok-bo (月印釋譜) and frontispiece aeight sheets of picture(八相圖) by the comparative analysis, approaching to theidentity of text and cultural influence in later period. Wol-in-seok-bo containsa various story as well as Buddha`s previous life and a biography, whichcombined together Seok-bo-sang-jeol(釋譜詳節) & Wol-in-cheon-gang-ji-gok(月印千江之曲) printed for buddhistic pray by Joseon dynasty`s royal family. Aeight sheets of picture formulate the whole life of Buddha as eight scenes, thatbegin to show Korean originality after Wol-in. It`s easy to anticipate that literature is overwhelming than pictures(eightscenes) in this text. But as the result of research, We can find out that thepicture located as a overhaul frame of this works as that related to thebeginning and final sites in the text. On the other side, the picture is closelyconnected with literature, and highlight the selected images symbolically at thesame time. The identity of Wol-in is on the integrity and individuality simultaneouslyand literature & picture among this text can retain it`s uniqueness. And thiskind of characteristic made the cultural realization of each genres for variousclasses and purpose in the later period.
