이 연구의 목적은 「최고운전」의 기우모티프와 돝섬기우제를 비교함으로써 소설과 민속신앙에 나타난 최치원의 신화화 현상을 규명하는 것이다. 「최고운전」 기우모티프의 기능은 탄생모티프와 함께 주인공의 신성을 드러내는 것이다. 주인공은 중국으로 가는 도중, 섬주민의 기우요청에 따라 용자(龍子)를 시켜 비를 내린다. 이것을 가능하게 한 것은 주인공의 문장능력이다. 기우모티프는 용궁을 설정함으로써 주인공의 활동공간을 확대하고,천상을 개입시켜 주인공이 적강한 존재임을 진술하게 한다. 이들 요소는 중국 황제에 대한 최치원의 능력의 우위를 확보하며 주인공의 승리에 당위성을 부여한다. 창원지역의 돝섬기우제는 최치원이 요괴의 기운을 퇴치한 능력과 그가지낸 제사 장소의 신성에 근거하여 형성되었다. 기우제의 형식은 제관 1명이 밤중에 돝섬에서 용신께 지내는 제사와 마산주민들이 가정에서 항아리를 엎어서 금줄을 두르거나 솔가지 꽂은 물병을 거꾸로 매다는 주술적 신앙이 병행되었다. 의례로서의 기우제는 사라지고 산정분화(山頂焚火) 형식의민속만 전승되다가 현재는 모두 전하지 않고 돝섬의 무속신앙으로 흔적이남아있다. 「최고운전」의 기우모티프와 돝섬기우제는 역사인물 최치원의 행적에 근거하고 있다. 소설은 최치원의 문장능력에 가치를 부여하고, 돝섬기우제는최치원이 머물렀던 월영대와 돝섬이라는 장소의 신성에 가치를 부여한 것이다. 소설에서 최치원이 비를 내리는 능력을 발휘한 것, 돝섬기우제 발생설화와 의례가 최치원의 신성에 근거한 것은 모두 역사인물의 신화화현상이다.

This paper is to examine mythologizing phenomenon for Choi Chi-Won by closely comparing the praying motif for rain in 「Choigounjeon」 with ritual for rain in Dotseom. The motif ritual for rain in 「Choigounjeon」 together with the birth motif contributes to prove the divinity for Choi Chi-Won. The praying request for rain of island residents and the rainfall by Dragon occurred based on the ability of the main character`s sentences. The activity space of the main character was expanded by setting up the fantasy world which is Dragon`s Palace and it was stated that the main character came into being by involving the heavenlyfigures. In addition, it was contributed to mythologization of the main character by giving justification for his divinity expression in overall narrative. The birth tale of the ritual for rain in Dotseom of Changwon is associated with the birth story of Choi Chi-Won. Later on the ritual for rain was held mimicking the fact that he held a sacrificial rite in order to remove the spirit of ghost. ritual for rain of Jacheondae in Okgu began due to magic effect of a treasured book and stone dragon. The ritual for rain of Dotseom was changed from sacrificial rite for the dragon god into the form of fire at the top of a mountain. the ritual for rain of Jacheondae became faded because the stone dragon was buried due to high cost. Such changes of the ritual for rain ocurred in the process of fading of the divinity and secularization. The praying motif for rain in 「Choigounjeon」 and the birth tale of the ritual for rain of Dotseom pursue mythologization of personage by connecting a historical figure Choi Chi-Won with the context of the sacrificial rite. In addition, secularization phenomenon of the divinity was found in the changing process of the sacrificial rite.
