조선조 17세기의 政局은 禮訟문제와 병자호란으로 불안한 분위기가 확산되었다. 혼란한 시국상황을 심각하게 인식하고 이를 극복하고 해결하려고 애쓴 인물이 갈암 이현일(1627-1704)이다. 갈암의 문학작품에는 병자호란을 소재로 하거나, 국가와 민족을 우려하는 내면심리를 드러낸 것이 많다. 이에 본고에서는 갈암이 남긴 문학작품 중 漢詩를 위주로 하여 갈암의 역사의식의 양상과 그 내면심리를 완색하였다. 갈암의 시문에 나타난 역사의식의 양상과 내면심리는 다음과 같다. 평화로운 자연세계와 공포의 전쟁터를 대조화하여 전란으로 인한 울분, 비통함과 위태로운 시국의 정황을 나타냈다. 여기서 더 나아가 위기상황을 대처하는 방안까지도 제시하였다. 역사탐방을 통해서는 과거의 역사에서 교훈을 삼아, 조선이 나아갈 방향을 개진하였다. 한편 건국신화 주인공과 다양한 소재를 활용하여 가문의 위상을 세우려는 강한 집념도 드러냈다. 大義名分에 입각한 역사의식의 구현에서는 중국 역사 속의 대표적인 인물들의 善惡의 행적을 추적하여, 우리 조선이 추구해야 할 인물상을 보였다. 애민정신의 발로에서는 관료들의 가렴주구한 횡포와 청나라의 부역에 동원되어 고생하는 백성들의 아픔을 측은지심으로 보살피려는 어진 관료의 모습을 드러냈다. 현실사회로부터의 갈등과 방황에서는 위기상황에 처한 조국 앞에서 아무 것도 할 수 없는 무능함에, 갈등하고 방황하는 내면심리를 드러냈다. 민족의 자부심과 정통성의 고양에서는 실추된 민족의 자존심을 회복하고, 민족의 정통성을 고취시켜 국가를 재건하고 싶은 기원을 담아냈다. 갈암의 역사의식은 이처럼 긍정적인 면모가 많다. 하지만 大義名分에 입각한 崇明排淸의 역사의식으로 17세기 국제사회의 정치적 패러다임을 제대로 인식하지 못한 부정적인 부분도 있다.

The political situation of the Choseon Dynasty in the 17th century was unstable and insecure with the issue of Chosun being courteous toward the Song Dynasty and the Manchu war of 1636, of which the Qing Dynasty invaded Choseon. Under these circumstances, Galam Lee Hyun Il(1627-1704), who took this situation seriously, tried to meet the challenge and came up with solutions. Many of his work unfold stories about the war, showing his worries about Choseon and its people. To that end, this paper studies the poems among the many of his pieces in order to interpret his historical consciousness and inner psychology. In his poems, he expressed a deep grief and fury over the war and described the situation of Choseon at risk by portraying peaceful nature and fearful battlefields in contrast. He moved forward as he presented solutions to precarious situations. He also suggested a way Choseon could learn lessons from its past history and make headway. In other aspects, he was firmly determined to establish the status of his family clan by featuring main characters of the birthmyth of Choseon in his work. Regarding his historical consciousness, he worked for a good cause as he presented an ideal character which Choseon should pursue by tracing good and evil acts of noticeable figures in Chinese history. As an officiary, he was benevolent and compassionate as he embraced the pain of the people who suffered extortion by bureaucrats and forced labor by the Qing. Regarding his psychology, he had inner conflicts as he seems to have incompetent feelings for the jeopardized country. But he prayed for Choseon to bereconstructed by restoring national pride and elevating legitimacy of the nation state. Overall, Galam has many positive aspects in his way of interpreting history. On the other hand, he failed to perceive the political paradigm of the international community in the 17th century as he took the stance that Choseon should revere the Ming Dynasty while severing relationship with the Qing Dynasty.
