본 논문은 <금방울전>의 주인공인 금방울의 조력적 역할에 대하여 분석하였다. 고전소설에서 주인공인 경우 보편적으로 조력자의 도움을 받는 경우가 대부분이다. 그러나 특이하게도 이 작품에서는 주인공이되, 주인공다운 조력의 혜택을 누리지 못하고, 오히려 주인공이 주변 인물들을 위해 배려와 봉사, 그리고 희생도 마다하지 않고 타인을 위해 조력하는 인물로 묘사되어 있다. 우선 금방울은 거의 모든 등장인물을 위해 방울인 형상 그 자체로 소통하면서 치밀하게 목적을 성취한다. 뿐만 아니라 천정배필인 해룡을 위해 해후할 때까지 지속적으로 도움을 주면서 베풀게 된다. 즉 주인공이지만 부여된 험난한 여정을 타인을 위해 사력을 다해 수행할 뿐, 조력자는 등장하지 않는다. 더욱이 금방울은 비록 방울의 형상을 하고 있지만 인간적 속성인 판단과 감성을 온전히 지니고 있다. 그러나 다만 언어적 표현 능력은 부여받지 못한 안타까운 조력자이다. 이러한 한계 때문에 더욱 더 방울을 굴려가면서 종횡무진 자신의 역할을 ‘수고롭게’ 할 수밖에 없다. 그 결과 금방울은 해룡에게 헤어진 부모를 찾아주기 위해 ‘그림족자’를 이용, 즉 ‘시각적 표현’ 방식을 동원하여 부모와 상봉할 수 있도록 계기를 마련해준다. 주인공이면서 타인을 위해 모든 조력적인 역할이 끝난 뒤에 비로소 금방울은 해룡과 결합하게 된다. 이는 예나 지금이나 모두가 주인공이 되고 싶은 인간의 욕망에서 한 발 물러서서, 타인을 위해 배려하는 삶이 진정한 가치가 있다는 메시지를 금방울을 통해 전달하고 있다고 볼 수 있다.
This thesis analyzes the supportive role of Geumbangwool, the heroine in Geumbangwool-jeon. It is usually helpers who help main characters in classic novels. However, surprisingly, Geumbangwool is not only a main character, but also a considerate helper. She does not take the advantage as a heroine but rather sacrifices herself for others. As a bell itself, she communicates with all the characters in the novel and achieves her goals. Also, she keeps helping people until she meets the only love of her life. In a word, she carries the role as a helper and goes through difficulties, but an actual helper for her does not exist in the novel. Moreover, even though she is a bell, she can judge and have emotions just like a human. The only thing she is not able to do is, unfortunately, speak. Because of this limitation, being unable to speak, the bell has to roll herself and makes the efforts. After all, Geumbangwool uses a picture scroll to find Haeryong`s missing parents for him, which is a method of “optical expression,” and to give him a chance to meet his parents again. Geumbangwool and Haeryong finally reunite after finishing her role as a helper. The fundamental message in this novel is, life is more valuable when we step back from the desire for getting spotlighted and care about other people.
