이 글은 풍양 조씨의 가계를 통해 풍양 조씨의 삶의 윤곽과 가치관을 살펴보고 이를 <자기록>과 연관시켜 본 것이다. 풍양 조씨의 집안은 지금까지 알려진 것처럼 한미한 무반 가문이라기보다는 서울의 중앙 권력과 연결되어 있으며, 경제적으로도 유복했던 것으로 보인다. 외가도 지방의 유력한 가문이었던 것으로 보인다. 풍양 조씨는 이러한 가계를 기반으로 풍족한 환경에서 성장했으며, 독서를 통해 글쓰기에 능했던 것으로 보인다. 남편이 죽자 따라죽으려 한 그녀의 태도는 유교적 가치관을 맹목적으로 따르는 것처럼 보이지만 그녀는 결국 살아남는 선택을 한다. 그리고 남편이 죽게 된 경위를 자세하게 서술하여 그 원인이 시집 어른들에게 있음을 암시한다. 이러한 태도는 유교적 가치관에 강박된 것이라고 보기 어렵다. <자기록>에서 풍양 조씨는 유교적 이념에 대한 강박보다는 현실적이고 일상적인 삶에 더 자연스럽게 이끌리는 것을 보여준다. 이처럼 이념이 아니라 삶을 선택한 풍양 조씨의 태도는 18～19세기 서울에 살았던 양반 여성이 삶에 대해 가졌던 현실적인 태도를 보여주는 한 예라고 본다.

This paper examines Poongyang-Jo-ssi`s life and view of life considering her family background. Poongyang-Jo-ssi`s family has been known as a low military nobility[武班]. However, it is turned out that she was actually from a wealthy family that had a connection to a very powerful family in Seoul area. Grown up in such a affluent background, she was able to write well as reading copious books. Right after her husband`s death, she decided to also die, following the confucian value. However, it is important that she changed her mind and decided to survive after all. Moreover, Jo-ssi even started to write about the history of her husband`s death. It made the fault of husband`s family to be revealed. Jo-ssi`s decision is different from the confucian virtue. Also, according to Jakirok, she tends to live trivial, daily, but realistic life, rather than devoted to the confucian ideology. Therefore, it can be concluded that Poongyang-Jo-ssi chose ``the life`` instead of ``the ideology``. Her choices show realistic point of view on the life, and it is one aspect of Seoul Yangban[兩班] women`s view of life in the 18-19th century.
