이 논문은 입송승(入宋僧) 자쿠쇼(寂照)가 문학 텍스트 안에서 어떻게 묘사되어 있는지, 어떠한 역할을 하고 있는지 라는 문제에 대하여 고찰해 본 것이다. 역사 텍스트에 나타난 일본승(日本僧)이 중국에서 실제로 행한 활동 내용이나 목적은 설화 등 문학 텍스트에 그려져 있는 양상과 다르다. 예를 들면, 설화 안에서 자쿠쇼의 중국에서의 활동은 중국황제 면전이라고 하는 장(場)과 깊이 연결되어 있다. 『곤자쿠모노가타리슈(今昔物語集)』 등에서는 황제 앞에서 수법(修法)을 훌륭히 행하여 황제의 귀의를 이끌어낸다. 그리고 그 수법의 성공은 일본 불법(傳法)의 힘으로 이루이진 것이라고 기술되어 있다. 자쿠쇼는 일본 불교의 중국에 대한 우위를 자랑하는 역할을 짊어지고 있다. 또한 다른 설화에서 자쿠쇼는 오대산(五台山) 문수보살(文殊菩薩)과 밀접한 관련을 가진 승려로도 그려져 있다. 즉, 자쿠쇼와 같은 일본의 훌륭한 승려가 지금 이 세상에 나타난 부처·보살과 인연을 갖는다고 하는 줄거리인 것이다. 그럼으로써 일본의 불교야 말로 중국 불교를 능가하는 실력을 가지고 있음을 나타내고 있다. 이와 같은 자쿠쇼의 입송(入宋)설화는 동아시아 세계에서 독자적으로 성립된 일본 불교 (중세 현밀불교)의 특질을 알 수 있는 중요한 열쇠가 될 것이다.

This paper discusses what part monk Jakusho has played in old literary works like Konjaku-monogatari-shu in light of the historical facts. Actually, Japanese monk Jakusho made a voyage to Northern Song China in the early years of the 11th century and dealt with Buddhist activities of his own until his death. But in some anecdotes, he plays a role different from his real life in China. For example, his activities in folk-literature are strongly linked to China``s emperor. He holds an esoteric ritual in the presence of the emperor with the assistance of the power of Japan``s Buddhism and accepts the emperor``s devotion. In this situation, Buddhism of Japan predominates over the rest. In addition, he is written to be closely connected to the bodhisattva Manjusri who lives in Mt.Wu-tai. Not Chinese people but Jakusho has a strong tie to the world of the bodhisattva. This characteristic of Jakusho``s anecdotes also means Buddhism of Japan has the power which surpassed that of China. To look at the implied meanings of the stories about Jakusho will lead to the understanding of historical feature of Japan``s medieval Buddhism.
