본 연구의 목적은 최근 한국의 대일수출이 증가하고 있는 원인을 자동차부품 사례를 통해 규명하는 것이다. 한국의 대일 자동차부품 무역은 1990년대 전반까지 큰 폭의 적자를 기록했으나 2012년에 일본으로부터의 수입이 감소하고 수출이 증가하면서 무역균형을 이루는 수준에까지 도달했다. 수입이 감소한 이유는 한국이 적극적으로 추진한 FTA체결이 주요했던 것으로 판단된다. 관세율이 낮아진 유럽과 미국으로부터의 수입이 증가하였고 일본의 완성차업체가 미국산 자동차를 한국 시장에 투입하기 시작한 것도 주요했다. 반면 대일수출이 급격히 증가한 것은 한국의 자동차부품 기업이 일본 시장을 적극적으로 개척하려는 움직임이 활발해지고 있고, 일본의 자동차 제조업체도 리스크 분산 차원에서 한국산 자동차부품 조달을 확대하고 있기 때문이다.

The purpose of the present study is to determine the cause of the recent increase in the Korean exports to Japan, examining several cases regarding auto parts. Korea`s export of auto parts to Japan, which had until the first half of the 1990s reached record highs in the trade deficit, ended up reaching a trade balance in 2012 after gradual decline in imports and rise in exports from Japan. The primary reason for the fall in the imports is believed to be the FTA agreement actively pursued by Korea. Other factors affecting the trade scene were the increased imports from Europe and the U.S. where the tax rates were lowered and the injection of U.S. made cars by the Japanese automakers into Korean market. In the meantime, the reasons behind the current increase of exports to Japan may be that there is a vibrant surge in attempting to explore Japanese market on the part of the Korean auto part corporations, while, at the same time, Japanese corporations are expanding their use of the Korean auto parts as a way of hedging their risks.
