본 연구는 북한이탈주민의 정착과정에서 작동하는 사회연결망의 일반적인 특성을 살펴보고, 그 특성이 그들의 거주지 선택에 미친 영향을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 경기도의 고양시, 안산시, 평택시에 거주하는 북한이탈주민 16명을 대상으로 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 북한이탈주민의 사회연결망은 크게 혈연 중심의 사회연결망, 북한이탈주민 간 사회연결망, 정부주도의 사회연결망, 한국인과의 사회연결망으로 구분될 수 있다. 둘째, 북한이탈주민의 사회연결망이 그들의 거주지 선택에 미친 영향은 지역별로 차이가 있었다. 고양시는 혈연 중심의 사회연결망이 강하게 작동하였고 정보의 폐쇄성 등으로 북한이탈주민의 재이주가 활발하게 이루어지지 않았다. 안산시는 중국인 사회연결망과 연계된 북한이탈주민의 사회연결망이 강하게 작용하였다. 중국인 사회연결망이 북한이탈주민의 연결망보다 크기 때문에 북한이탈주민 수는 빠르게 증가하지만 폐쇄적인 경향이 있었다. 평택시는 한국인과의 사회연결망이 강하게 작용하였고 안정적 일자리를 찾아 다른 지역으로부터 자발적으로 재이주한 북한이탈주민이 많았다. 따라서 북한이탈주민의 성공적 정착을 위해서 자발적으로 만들어가는 한국인과의 사회연결망이 확장될 수 있도록 정책적 지원이 요구된다.

This research aims to identify the general characteristics of social networks operating in the settlement of North-Korean refugees and to analyze their impacts on the residential choices of the refugees. For this, we conducted in-depth interviews with sixteen North-Korean refugees residing in Goyang, Ansan, and Pyeongtaek. The results of the study are as follows. First, the social networks of North-Korean refugees are classified into four categories: the social networks of kinship, the social networks of themselves, the social networks initiated by the government, and the social networks with Koreans. Second, there are regional variations in terms of the impact of social networks on their residential choices. In the case of Goyang, the social networks of kinship play the most significant role in their residential choice, and their further movements were not made due to limited information. In the case of Ansan, most North Korean refugees are those who are connected to the Chinese social networks, which made the community relatively closed and homogeneous. In the case of Pyeongtaek, the social networks with Koreans play a role in building up the community as a way that refugees who have Korean connections and information move in voluntarily in search for stable job opportunities. In conclusion, the government should support the refugees to make and develop their social networks with Koreans for their successful settlements.
