이 논문은 감각의 혁명이라는 관점에서 러시아 혁명과 구축주의 건축의 관계를 다루고자 한다. 구축주의자들은 입체주의 이후 아방가르드 예술이야기한 감각의 혁명과 1917년 러시아에서 일어난 사회혁명 간의 상응성을 자각하고 있었다. 구축주의 건축은 이런 감각의 혁명을 건축공간으로 구체화함으로써 혁명 이후 대중들의 생활방식을 변혁하고자 했다. 특히 건축공간을 혁명을 위한 사회적 응축기로 만들려는 문제의식은 이를 압축적으로 보여준다. 또한 역으로 사회혁명의 영향 속에서 급속한 속도로 진행된 구축주의자들의 실험은 건축의 기계적 기능이나 사회적 기능이라는 ‘내용’의 측면뿐 아니라 건축의 형태나 건축양식 같은 표현형식의 측면에서 새로운 양식을 창조했다. 기하학주의나 사선을 통한 다이내미즘의 표현, 그리고 탈대지적인 형태 등이 그러한 표현형식의 요체였다. 그러나 이러한 혁명적 건축과 감각의 혁명의 실험은 30년대에 들어가면서 중단되고 ‘실패’로 끝나고 만다. 실패의 가장 중요한 요인은 대중은 물론 당이나 많은 예술가들의 전통적 감각을 넘어서지 못했다는 것이었다. 이로 인한 감각의 혁명의 중단, 그것은 러시아에서 사회혁명의 ‘중단’을 뜻하는 것이기도 했다. 러시아 구축주의의 역사는 감각의 혁명 없이는 사회혁명도 없음을 보여준다고 하겠다.
This paper deals with the relation between the Russian Revolution and the constructivism from the perspective of the revolution of the sensation. Constructivists were aware of the correspondence between the revolution of the sensation stemming from the avant-garde art and the Russian Revolution in 1917. Constructivism aimed to change life style the mass by materializing the revolution of the sensation into architectural space. Especially, the intention of making architectural space into a social condenser summed it up. In addition, constructivists’ experiments that were done under the Russian Revolution’s influence created not only new ‘contents’ of architecture like mechanical functions and social functions, but also new styles of expression in architecture like shape and style of building. The expression of dynamism through the geometrism and diagonal line, and de-territorial forms were the essence of this new style of expression. However, these experiments of revolutionary architecture and the revolution of the sensation ceased and ‘failed’ in the 1930s. The main cause of this failure was that not only the mass but also many politicians and other artists could not accept the new sensation. The cease of the revolution of the sensation meant the cease of social revolution in Russia. The history of Russian constructivism shows that social revolution cannot exist without the revolution of the sensation.
