This study was based on a survey of 293 special school teachers for the intellectually disabled from 32 special schools on their satisfaction with the science textbooks developed according to 2011 basic curriculum of special education. The questionnaire with 70 questions was developed 5-point Likert scale. The t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe post-verification were utilized in this study. The following points summarize the key findings. First, elementary special school teachers gave more statistically significant positive evaluation on the overall organization of the science textbooks than middle and high school special teachers. Second, elementary special school teachers also gave more statistically significant positive evaluation on the contents of the science textbooks than middle and hight school special teachers. In terms of contents appropriacy in each section, the level of satisfaction was higher with the elementary science textbooks than with the middle and highschool textbooks. Third, teachers showed slightly higher levels of satisfaction with illustrations, pictures and activity materials in the current 2011 curriculum science textbooks than with the ones in the previous 2008 curriculum science textbooks. Fourth, the frequency of use of textbooks was remarkably lower in middle and high special schools than in elementary special schools. The major reason for the low frequency of textbook use was discrepancy between the expected student ability levels and the actual student ability levels. It was also found that most teachers utilize, along with the textbook, the teaching and learning materials that they developed themselves. With regard to the direction of textbook improvement, the overall structure of textbooks needs to be revised while maintaining the current 5 grade bands or 12-grade system. It was also found that supplementary textbooks and digital textbooks need to be developed. In addition, there is an urgent need to revise difficulty levels of middle and high school science textbooks since students experience difficulty adjusting to sudden increase in difficulty as they advance through the school system to higher grades.
