도시는 인구, 기능, 밀도 모든 면에서 과밀화됨으로 인해 교통시설은 물론 공공공간의 수요가 폭발적으로 증가하였다. 도시의 규모가 복잡해지면서 도시 공간에 대한 평면적 이용은 한계에 도달했다. 도시 내에 필요로 하는 대지는 증가하고 있지만, 한정된 자원을 확보하기란 매우 어려운 실정이다. 이런 문제들을 해결하는 동시에 토지 효용을 극대화하기 위한 방법으로 옥상공간의 필요성을 밝히고자 한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 옥상공간의 일반적 고찰과 함께 옥상공간의 기능과 가치성을 밝히고, 옥상이라는 한정된 공간에서 만큼은 전유공간으로서 도시민들의 객체화된 공간이 아닌 주체적 공간으로서의 가능성을 찾기 위해 사회학자 앙리 르페브르의 공간의 생산에서 사용한 이론을 통해 옥상공간의 사용흐름을 공간학적으로 분석하여 현시점에서 옥상공간이 전유공간으로서 어떤 노력이 필요할지 연구하려고 한다. 고대에서 현재까지 옥상공간의 흐름을 살펴봤을 때, 결과적으로 양식과 일상의 전유로서 형성되던 공간들이 질서와 체계의 파편화가 일어났으며, 공간은 자본적 가치에 따라 위계화 되었다. 현재에 이르러서는 더 이상 공간들에서 어떠한 특징과 다양성은 찾아 볼 수 없게 되었다. 현시점에서 전유할 수 있는 공간을 찾기 위해서는 소비적 추상공간에 물든 우리의 삶을 되찾아야 한다.

As cities become overcrowded in terms of population, function, and density, demand for transportation facilities and other public spaces rapidly increased. Increase of cities in size and complexity led them to reach a limit in plan use. In order to solve these problems and maximize land utility, the study aims to examine necessity of rooftop area. (Method)There fore, this study provides general discussion on rooftop area and its function and value, and analyzes the theory ofHenri Lefebvre on space production, in order to find the possibility of rooftop area as subjective space rather than objective space for urban residents, by analyzing the use of rooftop in terms of space, in order to find out what efforts should be made. (Result)Study on rooftop area suggests that, from the ancient to modern age, order and system of spaces that used to form as style and appropriation indaily life became fragmented, and space adopted hierarchy according to capital value. Today, there is no characteristic or diversity in spaces. In order to find a space that is to be appropriated, we need to find our life back from consumptive abstract spaces.
