이 논문에서 <보현시원가>에 나타난 시적 자아의 성격을 그 근거 작품인 『화엄경』의 <보현행원품>과 그 번역 작품인 <보현십원송>의 경우를 상호 대비하여 시적 자아가 가진 목소리의 성격, 시적 자아의 지향 의도와 그 실현으로서의 표현 내용, 의도의 실현을 위하여 사용한 표현법 등 세 가지 기준에서 논의를 진행했다. 자아의 목소리의 성격에서 산문과 운문의 두 부분으로 되어 있는 <보현행원품>의 자아가 산문부분에서는 서사적 작품 내적 자아, 운문에서는 시적 자아로 나타났고 경전의 성격상 이 두 자아는 교시적 성격을 가졌고, <보현시원가>의 자아는 근거 작품의 성격을 수용하여 교시성을 가지면서도 시적자아로서 정서적 감동을 유발하는 서정적이라는 성격을 가졌고, <보현시원송>의 자아는 시적 자아로서 <보현시원가>의 내용을 반복하면서 원가를 칭송하는 지향을 보여 교시적, 서정적 성격 위에 송도적 성격을 더 가진 것으로 나타났다. 자아의 지향 의도에 따라 작품의 중심 내용에서 <보현행원품>의 자아는 지향한 의도가 교시였기 때문에 중생 제도라는 교시할 내용을 길게 담아내는 특성을 보여 주었고, <보현시원가>의 자아는 지향한 의도가 교시에 기초한 감동이었기 때문에 성상융회, 법계연기의 철리를 새로운 내용으로 제시하고 정서적 표현을 두드러지게 하는 특성을 보여 주었고, <보현시원송>의 경우에는 작품 전체적으로 칭송 지향의 의도를 가졌기 때문에 <보현시원가>의 핵심 내용을 그대로 번역하면서 그 가치를 드러내는 데에 필요한 구체적 내용을 보완하거나 직접적 칭송의 내용을 보여 주었다. 표현방식에서는 일정한 성격의 자아가 <보현행원품>에서는 교시의 의도를 실현하기 위하여 교시의 내용을 나열하고, 과장하거나 강조하는 수사를 구사하고, 모르는 것을 알려 주기 위하여 설명, 인물간의 대화, 설명, 비유 등 수사를 사용하고 있었고, <보현시원가>에서는 근거작의 수사를 최소화하면서 영탄법, 은유, 비유, 상징, 역설법 등을 주로 사용하여 함축을 통한 감동이라는 서정의 효과를 높이고 있었고, <보현시원송>에서는 칭송을 위해서 대체로 <보현시원가>의 표현방식을 따르면서 율시의 특성으로 나타난 대구법을 가장 많이 사용하고 있었다.

This dissertation is written in order to research for the characteristics of the poetic persona in in three aspects by comparing with and . The first aspect is about the characteristics of the poetic persona`s voice, The second aspect is about the characteristics of the poetic persona`s intention, and the third aspect is about the characteristics of the poetic persona`s expression method. Firstly, in the aspect of the characteristics of the poetic persona`s voice, the characteristics of the poetic persona`s voice in are instructional and lyrical. But the characteristics of the poetic persona`s voice in are instructional, The characteristics of the poetic persona`s voice in are instructional, lyrical and panegyrical. Secondly, in the aspect of the characteristics of the poetic persona`s intention, the poetic persona`s intention in is teaching lay people by touching them. The persona`s intention in is only teaching lay people by explaining Sutra. And the poetic persona`s intention in is teaching lay people by touching them, and panegyrizing . Thirdly, in the aspect of the characteristics of the poetic persona`s expression method. the rhetoric like metaphor, paradox, symbolism etc were used in in order to teach lay people by touching them. The method of explaining and taking example etc were used in in order to teach lay people. The rhetoric like metaphor, paradox, symbolism etc and antithesis were used in in order to teach lay people by touching them plus panegyrizing . Even though I studied the characteristics of the poetic persona in in three aspects, there could be the other things to study about these kinds of theme. I might continue researching the other kinds of theme next time in the near future.
