본고는 18세기 후반 別監 安道煥이 창작한 ≪만언사≫의 성격과 지향점, 현실적 맥락과 결부된 작품의 의의 등에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. 유배가사뿐만 아니라 가사 전체로 보더라도 ≪만언사≫는 상당히 많은 이본을 산출할 정도로 활발하게 유통되었으며 소설에도 삽입될 만큼 인기를 끌었던 작품이다. 또한 가사 작품 여러 편이 이어진 연작의 형식이라는 점도 이채로울 뿐만 아니라 몇몇 이본들에는 작가와 창작에 관련된 정보를 담고 있는 후기도 덧붙여 있다는 점에서 연구자들의 큰 관심을 받아왔다. 본고에서는 이러한 점에 주목하면서 유배가사로서의 성격 이면에 내재한 규방가사 내지는 교훈가사의 성격을 드러내고, 이를 창작 당시의 정치현실과 관련지어 해석하고 의미를 부여하려 하였다. 그 결과 ≪만언사≫ 연작은 작가의 유배형이라는 외적 환경에 의해 작품의 창작이 촉발되었지만, 유배를 계기로 자신의 과거를 반성하고 개과천선을 다짐하는 쪽으로 나아가 결국 작품의 성격이 규방가사 내지는 교훈가사로 기울어지게 되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 곧 대부분의 유배가사 작품들처럼 이 작품 역시 임금에 대한 그리움과 충성을 술회하지만, 이에 그치지 않고 작품 후기의 내용처럼 규방의 부녀자와 임금까지도 관심을 표명할 만한 요소들을 더하게 된다는 것이다. 부모와 처자 등에 대한 효성과 그리움의 정서를 짙게 드러내고 지난 삶에 대한 반성과 성찰을 통한 개과천선에의 의지를 다짐한다는 것이 그러한 요소들에 해당하는 구체적 내용이라 할 것이다. 특히 효성에 대한 강조와 일가에 대한 그리움은 그 당시 임금인 정조의 통치 강령과 정책 기조인 효치사상과도 상당히 부합하는 측면이 있어 작품에 이목을 집중하게 한 요인으로 작용한 것으로 보인다. 그러므로 본고의 관점에서 볼 때, ≪만언사≫의 ‘萬言’은 유배가사로서의 임금에 대한 충성에다가 교훈가사로서의 삶에 대한 자성과 성찰, 규방가사로서의 부모와 처자에 대한 그리움 등이 한데 버무려진 상태, 곧 유배 당시까지의 인생 역정에 대한 복잡다단한 심정의 술회와 새로운 앞날을 위한 각오와 의지를 뜻하는 것으로 이해된다.

The purpose of this paper is to look at the nature, orientation and significance of maneonsa written by An Do-hwan(安道煥) in the Late 18th century. Maneonsa was distributed actively enough to produce the very large variant texts of this work and gained huge popularity enough to be inserted in the novel. In addition, this work is very interesting in the format works of a serial and it is interesting in that it has a postscript with the information related to the author and creation situation of the work. This paper took note of these points. So this paper revealed the nature as Gyubang lyrics or Didactic lyrics in addition to the nature of the work as a Exile lyrics and interpreted this in conjunction with the political reality of the time. The result of the discussion may be summarized as follows. The creative writing of thw work was launched by the exile of the writer. But in the end the work was inclined to Gyubang lyrics or Didactic lyrics on depending on the intention of the writer who wanted to be released from exile. The writer of this work also stated allegiance to the king like the other writers of the exile lyrics. he included not only this content but also the information which women and king might sympathize with.
