The purpose of this study is to examine the significance of the pilgrimagesundertaken by the main characters and how they develop the main theme of theTale of Genji with reference to other literary works from the Heian period. Pilgrimages signify motifs not simply on the movement of place but also theblessings by the divine response. In the Sekiya volume, Genji encounters Utsusemi returning to Kyoto at thegateway of Osaka on his way to worship at the Ishiyamadera temple. The plot ofGenji and Utsusemi``s reunion is developed in the wake of the pilgrimage to thetemple. In the first part of the Wakana volume Genji``s grandson, who has been bornto a daughter of Akashi, becomes a crown prince and will be the next emperor. Genji thinks the divine response is all down to his visiting and worshipping at theSumiyoshi shrine. In the Tamakazura volume, Tamakazura and Ukon believe theirmeeting again is due to the miraculous virtues of their walking pilgrimage to theHasedera temple. In chapter three, Ukihune’s meeting with Kaoru and Ninomiya isalso believed to be a blessing from the pilgrimage of worship to the Hasedera temple. It is found that Pilgrimages in the Tale of Genji are major spatial devices thatdepict meeting, parting and reunion of the main characters, and are foreshadows thatinform the prayer``s anticipation for the divine response as well. In conclusion, a pilgrimage in Monogatari literature in the Heian period is oneof the main motifs that signifies relationships of main characters and develops theliterary work``s major themes.
