神話とは古代人たちが日常に抱く宗敎觀によって描かれた虛構の世界である。その神-の活動した舞台背景に古代の人間世界が持ち入まれ、思想が語り傳えられたものだ。すなわち、古代人たちにとって神話の世界とは、現實と等質次元の、遠い過去の世界と映じていたに違いない。以上のような歷史的理解に基づいて見ると、そこに二つの次元を超えたかかわりあいを分析してみる余地の幾つかは殘されているといえよう。ここでは、日本神話の玉と日本の遺跡出土の玉との關わりについて考察する。先ず、神話の玉に關する字の字典的な分析と、タマに關する辭書的な分析をした。その上、神話に現れた玉を示す用語を抽出し、その形に關する考古學的名稱を捕らえた。そして、考古學での遺物としての意味に基づき、神話上の玉の持つ象徵性を二つとして分類した。ひとつは、裝飾的意味の玉として、イザナキがアマテラスに讓る首飾りの「御頸珠」が擧げられる。これを裝飾する目的は稜威を象徵するためである。玉の持つ靈的な能力によって、首長としての權力が保てる。このような古代の樣相は、古墳出土の玉とその考古學的な見解を通じて認められている。また、スサノとアマテラスの「誓約」段にも「曲玉」という形で玉の靈力が現れている。もう-つ、祭祀的意味の玉は、「天岩屋戶」のアマテラスを招魂する祭式だともする神話の中で、祭儀的な道具としてよく描かれている。日本の遺跡の中では、玉が發見された祭祀の跡を、4·5世紀の祭祀遺跡として認めている。この考古學的見解とともに、神話に現れた祭祀玉の樣相を多角的に見た。さて、古代人において玉は、その稀な物質的價値までも、首長たるものの持つ貴重な裝飾品として認められた。その質によって異なる神秘的な光までも、靈的な力が發揮されると信じられた理由のひとつである。それで、稜威を表すためにも、死んだ後の靈魂を守るためにも、體にまた遺體に飾られた。そのゆえ、神を祭る祭式には、無くてはいけない必須的な祭儀道具になったのである。以上のように、文獻神話の記錄と、考古學的成果である遺物とのかかわりあいを中心に、タマの持つ象徵性を考察した。
