장애인 차별과 인종주의 문제는 몸에 이념을 투사하고 있다는 점에서 닮았다. 장애인에 대한 차별이개인의 몸의 손상을 무능력으로 규정하는데서 비롯된다면 인종주의는 인종에 따른 몸의 차이(생물학적차이)가 인간의 능력을 결정한다는 믿음을 과학적으로 증명하고자 한 것이다. 이 연구가 천착하는 것은장애인 문제나 인종의 문제를 다룸에 있어 차별을 정당화하는, 인간의 의식에 구조화된 ‘타자에 대한 규정원리’가 어떻게 인종주의와 장애인 차별로 외현되는가를 이해하고 성찰의 과제로 삼고자 했다. 이 연구에서는 인종주의와 장애인 차별을 타자인 소수에 대한 사회적 주류의 ‘아주 오래된 의식의 장치’가 작동한 (상징)폭력으로 해석하였다. 이러한 해석은 현대사회의 일상화된 인종주의와 장애인 차별을 해독(decoding)하는 하나의 도구로써 유용하다. 해석의 정교화를 위해 Bourdieu의 아비투스와 상징폭력 개념을 차용함으로써 이러한 지배의 아비투스가 우리가 사는 사회(場) 구조에 의해 어떻게 개인에게 구조화되는지, 그리고 이 구조화된 구조로서의 아비투스는 어떻게 행위로 발현되어 상징폭력이 되는지를 고찰하려고 하였다.

Racism and discrimination of the disabled are similar in that both of them project certainkinds of ideologies into bodies. Racism is an ideology that tries to prove the belief thatphysical differences between races (biological differences) determine human abilities. Similarly, discrimination of the disabled is an ideology that defines a physical impairment asa disability. What this study pays attention to is an ‘apparatus of consciousness’ thatoperates racism and discrimination of the disabled. This study does not take a perspectivethat sees racism and discrimination of the disabled as historical events that occurred incertain historical points. Instead, this study focused on the explanation about how ‘definitionprinciples of others’ structured in human consciousness are expressed into racism anddiscrimination of the disabled. The present researcher interpreted racism and discriminationof the disabled as violences that operated by ‘long-term apparatus of consciousness’ ofhegemonic groups against minority groups. This interpretation is useful to decode racismand discrimination of the disabled, which are spreaded in our everyday life in modernsociety. Using the concept ‘habitus’ coined by Pierre Broudieu, the present researcher tried todemonstrate how the habitus of domin tion is structured into individuals by socialstructures, and how this habitus, as a structured structure, is expressed into humanbehaviors. Additionally, the present researcher interpreted the operational principle of habitus,as a continuously structured structure, as something can replace domination with fraternity,and separation with integration.
