왜 현대 도시민은 불안에 떠는가? 또 어떻게 불안을 견디는가? 이 물음들에 대답하기 위해 필자는 불안에 대한 정신분석적, 철학적 논의들을 살펴보면서 불안의 원형이 일차적 친밀관계나 의존적 대상으로부터 자아가 분리되는 과정에서 나타난다는 점을 논의할 것이다. 나아가 필자는 이 논의를 울리히 벡의 위험사회론과 접합시키는 가운데 이러한 불안의 원형이 ‘개인’의탄생을 알린 근대도시의 사회문화적 조건 하에서 본격화되며, 불확실성과 파편화로 인해 지속적 친밀관계와 확실한 지식체계가 와해되는 현대도시의 사회문화적 조건 하에서 가장 첨예화될 수 있다는 것을 보여줄 것이다. 마지막으로 필자는 대상관계 이론가 도널드 위니캇의 “충분히 좋은 엄마”와 자기탐색의 “놀이”, “문화 경험” 등을 분석하는 가운데 현대 도시에서 가능한 충분히 좋은 인문환경으로서의 친밀관계의 방향을 재구성하고, 현대 도시민이 핵가족을 대신할 수 있는 다양한 친밀관계를 형성하고 놀이로서의 문화를 향유할 수 있는 쉼의 장을 마련할 때, 불안을 견디어 낼 수 있음을 주장하고자 한다.

Why do people in the modern urban space sit on thorns? How can they endure their anxiety? To answer the questions, I first take a look into psychological and philosophical discourses on anxiety and argue that a prototype of anxiety comes out in the process of separation of self from the primary object relation. In addition to that, I insist that the anxiety as a individual experience becomes serious in modern urban space in which the individual comes into existence, and the problem of anxiety is radicalized in contemporary urban space in which the continuous relation and certainty of knowledge collapse. Finally I try to find out a possibility of intimate relationship of our city as a good enough humanistic environment, while I reconstruct the Donald Winnicott’s concepts of “good enough mother”, “playing” and “cultural experience.” My point is that citizens might endure their anxiety, only when they could be good at playing or enjoying culture by themselves or with others in a good enough environment or rest. In playing or experiencing culture, they could find their unintegrated selves and weave them without anxiety.
