이 글은 제주도의 마을 의례에서 벌어지는 사례에 대한 관계에 기초한 연구이다. 특히 2월 달에 연행하는 제주도 영등제를 중심으로 신화와 의례의 상관성을 논의한다. 이 의례에는 영등하르방에 대한 특별한 신화가 전승된다. 외눈박이 땅에 표류해간 제주도 사람을 구제하는 영등하르방을 기리고 영등하르방에 안겨주는 풍요성을 기리는 의례이다. 그것은 자연주기와 함께 생명주기를 중시하는 생명체계로부터 비롯된다고 하는 사실을 해석하였다. 외눈박이 땅에 표류한 인물과 그곳에서 외눈박이의 공격을 막아준다고 하는 것은 인간 수호신에 대한 자연의 경배를 암시하는 것이고, 외눈박이는 식인을 전제로 한 외진 곳에서의 괴물적 성격을 반영한 존재임을 말해준다. 인간이 괴물의 공격으로부터 어려움을 이기고 무사하게 귀환하기를 비는 신화가 풍요신화로 바뀌었을 개연성을 지적하였다. 제주도의 당제 주기 가운데 영등제는 제주만의 독자성을 말하는 것은 아니다. 오히려 육지부 쪽의 전승과 일치하고 그쪽에서는 이를 영등할머니라고 하는 특정한 것과 연관지었는데 이 전승을 통해서 이른 바 바람을 신격화하고 이를 생명체계로 계승한 것으로 인정되고, 영등하르방이라고 한 제주도의 전승과 준별되는 특성이 있어서 제주도의 독자성이 두드러지게 된다.
