이 연구는 제주도 「문전본풀이」에 대한 재조명이다. 연구의 관점을 바꾸어서 선행 연구에서 논하지 않은 비교 연구를 하고자 한다. 비교신화학적 관점에서 인도네시아의 하이누벨레신화와 비교한다. 「문전본풀이」에 관한 연구는 어느 정도 진척되었지만 이제 비교신화학의 관점으로 인도네시아 서세람 섬의 하이누벨레신화와 비교하면서 이 신화 자료의 의의가 새롭게 조명될 전망을 가지게 되었다. 「문전본풀이」는 기왕에 세 가지 각도에서 연구된 바 있다. 첫째, 이 본풀이를 계모형 설화로 다루었다. 제주도와 우리나라 전역에 전승되는 민담과 깊은 관련을 지니면서 이 본풀이가 지니는 의의를 밝힐 수 있는 관점이다. 둘째, 이를 집안의 수호신담으로 연구하는 관점이 있다. 가정수호신의 기원을 해명하는 점에서 이 연구는 일정한 빛을 던져준다. 셋째, 이 본풀이를 기원담의 일환으로 연구하는 것이다. 「문전본풀이」의 결말 부분에 대한 여러 가지 기원에 관한 요소가 있으므로 이를 연구한다. 이 연구에서는 세 번째 관점을 확대하고 「문전본풀이」가 음식기원신화, 생활도구기원신화, 인간을 괴롭히는 흡혈 곤충 기원신화 등으로 정리할 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 하이누벨레신화와 비교하면서 「문전본풀이」가 음식기원신화로서의 가능성을 새롭게 해석한 것이다. 음식기원신화의 주인공으로 등장하는 노일제데귀일의과 하이누벨레는 각각의 신화 속에서 집단의 외부자로 등장해서 내부에 해를 끼치거나 위협적인 존재로 인식됨으로써 철저하게 살해되고, 그 사체는 분해됨으로써 새로운 음식을 만들어내는 신으로써 자리하게 된다. 그들의 죽음은 곧 음식을 만드는 데서 끝나지 않고 음식을 채집, 보관, 가공할 수 있는 도구들의 생산으로 이어진다. 이러한 이 여성신들의 면모는 남성신들이 자신의 희생을 통해서 새로운 농경작물을 생산해내고 농사의 과정을 엄격하게 강조함으로써 감사의례의 주인공이 되는 것과 비교됨으로써 독자적인 지위를 차지하고 있다.

This study is refocused about the Jeju Island is about 「Munjeonbonpuri」.
