이 글은 근대 초기 국어교과서를 살펴 문학교육의 특성을 추출하기 위한 것이다. 근대 초기 제 3차 교육령기에 발행된 『조선어독본』은 문학교육의 특성을 탐색하기 위해서 이 글에서 주목한 텍스트다. 먼저 『조선어독본』의 교과서로서의 위상을 정치적·사회적 측면에서 검토하였다. 그런 다음 『조선어독본』에 담긴 문학 작품을 토대로 문학교육을 살펴 반증의 방법으로 문학교육의 특성을 추출하였다. 일제강점기 국어교과서인 『조선어독본』에는 문학작품들이 수정되거나 개작되어 수록되어 있다. 본고는 이 점에 착안하여 교과서로 실현되는 문학교육의 특성을 추출하고자 하였다. 이는 현행 문학교육에 시사점을 제공하기 위한 것이다.
